TV-Series
Description
Futaba Ooki, initially a reserved and introverted teenager, moved from Tokyo to Shizuoka's coastal town. There, she met Hikari Kohinata, an energetic peer passionate about scuba diving. Despite Futaba's initial inability to swim and discomfort with new experiences, Hikari's influence drew her into diving, marking a significant life shift.
Futaba possesses pale skin, thigh-length dark hair (often black or dark brown) with bangs swept to the left, and violet eyes. Hikari nicknamed her "Teko," derived from "Tenten no Ko" (Tenten girl), referencing her thin eyebrows resembling Japanese dakuten diacritics. She holds a moped license and commutes via scooter, reflecting her preference for independence.
Extremely shy, Futaba struggled even with basic self-introductions. She often avoided challenges like running or weightlifting, calling herself a "weakling," though possessing a latent competitive streak and dislike of losing. Her hobbies included taking photos with her mobile phone to preserve memories. Early in Shizuoka, she remained tethered to her phone, symbolizing isolation until Kino Kohinata (Hikari's grandmother) urged her to appreciate her surroundings during their first encounter by the sea.
Her development centered on overcoming fears through diving. After earning her Open Water Diver certification, she pursued the Advanced Open Water Diver certification in *Advance*. This involved mastering skills like underwater navigation and night diving, confronting anxieties about hindering Hikari. She succeeded by internalizing lessons from peers and instructors. Her relationship with Hikari deepened; Futaba frequently worried about separation but learned to cherish their moments after Hikari's reassurance during a New Year's Eve gathering, underscored by mutual letters expressing gratitude.
Key experiences in *Advance* included diving in a drysuit to encounter the legendary "Jet-Black Mermaid," participating in seasonal festivals like the Yamayaki Festival at Mount Omuro, and supporting Hikari during a birthday illness. She formed connections with new characters: Kokoro and Kotori Misaki, and Hikari's younger sister, Kodama. Her advanced certification culminated in a night dive, marveling at the ocean's nocturnal beauty and solidifying her commitment.
By the series' conclusion, she welcomed Kodama and Kotori into the Diving Club, joining them on a dive to a site Kino discovered years prior, symbolizing her transition from an apprehensive newcomer to a confident mentor figure. Additional details include her April 3rd birthday, blood type AB, height of 170 cm, skill at the children's game "The Daruma Doll Has Tumbled," and fears of insects and difficulty waking early.
