Description
Kazuto Kirigaya, originally named Narusaka Kazuto and born October 7, 2008, was adopted by his aunt and uncle after his biological parents perished in an accident. Discovering his adoption at age ten through erased Juki Net records, he inadvertently distanced himself from his cousin Suguha Kirigaya. Inspired by his aunt’s computer journalism career, he cultivated early technological prowess by building a computer from spare parts in elementary school and mastering programming, fostering a preference for solitude and virtual spaces.
He joined one thousand beta testers for *Sword Art Online* (SAO), accumulating extensive playtime during the closed beta. Upon the game’s launch, he was trapped among ten thousand players in the death game. Choosing a solo playstyle to shield fellow beta testers from discrimination, he adopted the self-made label "Beater." After briefly joining the Moonlit Black Cats guild, their annihilation due to a fatal error intensified his guilt and reinforced his isolation. His combat skills and black attire earned him the "Black Swordsman" epithet. He later joined the Knights of the Blood guild following a duel loss to leader Heathcliff and defeated the final boss, Kayaba Akihiko, liberating most players.
Post-SAO, three hundred players—including his partner Asuna Yuuki—remained comatose. Investigating Asuna’s appearance in *ALfheim Online* (ALO), he created a Spriggan avatar to utilize the race’s dark aesthetics. With Suguha (as Leafa) and AI Yui, he exposed and halted Nobuyuki Sugou’s experiments on comatose players, rescuing Asuna and others. During this mission, he acquired the Holy Sword Excalibur, reserving it for emergencies. Later, he aided government agent Seijirou Kikuoka in probing *Gun Gale Online* (GGO)-linked deaths. Using a rare feminine M9000 avatar, he entered the "Bullet of Bullets" tournament to lure killer "Death Gun," resolving the case while suspect Johnny Black escaped.
In June 2026, Kikuoka recruited Kazuto to test the Soul Translator (STL), a fourth-generation FullDive device for Project Alicization—a military artificial fluctlight AI initiative. Unaware of its true goals, he dived into Underworld, where time flowed a thousand times faster than reality. His real-world memories restricted, he lived nearly eleven accelerated years as Kirito, befriending locals Eugeo and Alice Zuberg. When Alice violated the Taboo Index by crossing forbidden boundaries, she was captured and sentenced to execution. Kazuto was forcibly logged out with his Underworld memories blocked.
On January 19, 2025, Kazuto awoke in the real world, but Johnny Black ambushed and injected him with succinylcholine, stopping his heart. Revived yet severely brain-damaged, he fell into a coma. The Japan Self-Defense Force covertly moved him to the Ocean Turtle facility, reconnecting him to the STL to stabilize his mind. In Underworld, he regained his memories and reunited with Eugeo, now an Integrity Knight. They infiltrated the Axiom Church to rescue Alice—also an Integrity Knight. Eugeo sacrificed himself to defeat pontifex Administrator, but Kazuto’s mind shattered during a real-world link attack, leaving him catatonic.
During the Human Empire–Dark Territory war, Kazuto remained vegetative under Alice’s care near Rulid Village. Real-world friends—Asuna, Sinon, Leafa, and others—converted their ALO avatars to Underworld to protect him and aid the Human Empire. Asuna, diving as goddess Stacia, spurred his partial recovery through proximity. Kazuto regained agency using Underworld’s Incarnation system (willpower manifestation) to defend allies. His journey culminated in confronting external threats like Gabriel Miller (Subtilizer), who sought to exploit Underworld’s AI.
Kazuto’s experiences forged trauma-driven resilience: social reticence from solitary upbringing, guilt over past failures, and fierce protectiveness of loved ones. His technical skill enabled virtual-world mastery, while emotional vulnerabilities—particularly SAO-induced PTSD and comrade deaths—often motivated his actions. In Underworld, his identity shifted from traumatized survivor to change catalyst, influencing AI development and challenging military technology exploitation.
