Description
Selka Zuberg, younger sister to Alice Zuberg and daughter of Rulid Village Chief Gasupht Zuberg, is five years Alice's junior. She first appears at age twelve during Human Empire Calendar year 378. After Integrity Knight Deusolbert Synthesis Seven apprehends Alice for violating the Taboo Index, Selka moves into the village church to study Sacred Arts under Sister Azalia, aspiring to fill her sister's role. Persistent insecurity plagues her due to comparisons with Alice's exceptional Sacred Arts abilities, a perceived gap she feels unable to bridge. This insecurity fuels her reluctance to visit her parents' home after relocating to the church.
Living at the church, Selka cares for orphaned children, assisting with worship services and meals. She develops particular concern for Eugeo, noting his loss of smiles following Alice's departure. When Kirito arrives in Rulid Village, she becomes his caretaker, showing him the church facilities and ensuring his comfort. During an evening conversation, Kirito reveals Alice's fate, prompting Selka to venture alone to the Northern Cave near the Dark Territory to understand her sister's actions. Goblins capture her there, intending to sell her in the Dark Territory.
Kirito and Eugeo rescue her, but Eugeo sustains life-threatening injuries during the battle. Overcoming initial hesitation, Selka performs a high-risk Sacred Art, transferring «Life» from Kirito to Eugeo to save him. This act demonstrates her developing proficiency and willingness to endanger herself for others. She later attends village celebrations for Eugeo completing his Sacred Task and assists an inebriated Kirito, receiving a forehead kiss from him accompanied by a promise to return Alice.
Two years later, during Human Empire Calendar year 380, Alice returns to Rulid with a comatose Kirito but faces village rejection. Defying her father's stance, Selka approaches Alice and facilitates her resettlement in a nearby forest by introducing her to the elder Garitta. This reconciliatory act bridges the long separation between the sisters.
After the Underworld war, Selka advances as a Sacred Arts apprentice, eventually rising to become the second leader of the Sacred Arts Division. In Human Empire Calendar year 441, she undertakes a profound sacrifice: alongside friends Ronye Arabel and Tiese Schtrinen, she voluntarily undergoes the Deep Freeze Technique. This ritual encases her in stone and ice for 200 years, a stasis endured to await Alice's return. The spell breaks when Kirito returns from the planet Admina with the necessary key, allowing Selka to reunite with Alice. Following her awakening, she continues refining freezing and awakening techniques to safeguard Underworld's inhabitants.
Throughout her life, Selka exhibits kindness, gentleness, and quiet bravery, particularly in protecting friends and family. She harbors unspoken affection for Eugeo and maintains a trusting relationship with Kirito. Her dedication to the orphaned children of Rulid remains a defining trait, reflecting her selfless nature.
