Description
Chester Ray Galford is the feudal lord of Faltra City in the Kingdom of Lyferia and holds the rank of Lieutenant General. A middle-aged man with black hair and brown eyes, he is consistently seen in a distinctive white military uniform. His personality is defined by condescension, arrogance, and spitefulness, marked by racism, sexism, and pettiness. Despite these traits, he is officially recognized as a hero for his pivotal role in defeating the Demon King Enkvaros 30 years prior to the main events. He prioritizes the safety of Faltra's citizens above all else.
Galford harbors deep distrust for adventurers, frequently belittling and insulting them despite their contributions to defending Faltra from threats like demonic invasions. This mistrust leads to critical errors, including withholding time-sensitive intelligence about elven ultimatums from the Adventurer's Guild. He later launches a surprise attack on Diablo's group after their battle with the Force Hydra, attempting to seize the elven princess, Shera L. Greenwood. He justifies this action by claiming adventurers are unfit to protect her, even though her captivity resulted from her brother using Faltra's citizens as hostages.
In conflicts, Galford employs ruthless pragmatism. He delays intervening in battles between Diablo and elven forces to let them exhaust each other before moving to capture Shera. During a retreat, he executes the unarmed and non-threatening Keera L. Greenwood to advance his agenda of preemptive warfare against the elves. Galford believes overwhelming force is necessary to protect Faltra, advocating for the extermination of elves even after their surrender and using Shera as a hostage. After losing a duel to Diablo over Shera's fate, he dares Diablo to kill him, hinting at a potential trap.
Galford is an exceptionally powerful combatant. Diablo estimates his level at 120 or higher based on his speed and precision—exemplified when he slices Alicia Crystella's blade before she fully draws it—and his use of high-level 《Martial Arts》. Key abilities include an unnamed defense-type 《Martial Art》 that nullifies one attack per battle; 《Heat Sonic》, learned at level 120, which heats his blade to deliver eight instantaneous slashes; and 《Sword of Light》, manifesting a blade from spiritual energy (SP). He combines swordsmanship with elemental enhancements, magical barriers, and large-scale concealment magic, reflecting a Magic Knight fighting style. His tactics involve rapid, cumulative strikes to overwhelm opponents.
Galford maintains a heroic public image for repelling demonic armies single-handedly, masking his manipulative and self-serving actions. He deflects blame for his failures, such as accusing adventurers of untrustworthiness when confronted about attacking Diablo unprovoked. His relationship with Diablo is adversarial, rooted in clashing ideologies: Diablo avoids unnecessary conflict, while Galford initiates it preemptively. He views all interactions through a lens of Realpolitik, assessing individuals solely as assets or liabilities to Faltra's security.
