Description
Backbeard, also called Beard, stands as a powerful Western yōkai and a major series antagonist. Renowned as the most formidable yōkai in Western nations, he frequently leads invasions targeting Japan.
His core appearance presents a spherical, shadowy form dominated by a single large central eye encircled by a visible eyelid and covered in short, root-like tentacles. Design specifics shift across adaptations: early anime versions depict light gray skin with a lighter iris. The third anime features a larger eye with a yellow sclera and red iris, a blue eyelid, and shorter, split tentacles. The fourth anime keeps similar eye colors but adds a visible pupil and shorter, fuzzier tentacles. The fifth anime increases his size to that of a small castle, granting a white sclera, red iris, and longer tentacles. The sixth anime presents a green eyelid, a yellow sclera with a veined red iris, and longer, crack-like tentacles. He can manifest a physical humanoid form with dark, green-tinted skin and his eye centered on the face, though revival returns him to his standard sphere.
Backbeard exhibits a prideful, moody, and egoistic nature. He harbors deep contempt for Japanese yōkai, deeming them weak and unworthy. Despite this arrogance, he displays obedience toward stronger entities, accepting Akashita’s judgment during the Yōkai Rally without protest. While primarily antagonistic, he occasionally allies with protagonists, aiding Medama-Oyaji in locating a New York spy or rescuing Kitarō from hypnosis. Even then, he retains his wickedness, causing traffic accidents for amusement by blinding drivers. The sixth anime amplifies his classic villainy, espousing social Darwinism and believing the strong possess the right to dominate or eliminate the weak. He shows no loyalty to followers, sacrificing Adél and Agnès’ mother to access the Ring of Arcana and injuring Adél to force Agnès into the Brigadoon Project. His personality amalgamates traits from his inner circle: Wolfgang’s disdain for weakness, Carmilla’s sadism, Victor Frankenstein’s amorality, Adél’s cunning, and Agnès’ mystical prowess.
Backbeard debuted in the 1966 manga story "The Great Yōkai War," leading a Western yōkai army including Dracula and Frankenstein to invade Kikai Island. They slaughtered half the population and nearly exterminated the Kitarō family. After hypnotizing Kitarō, Medama-Oyaji defeated him by stabbing his eye. In "Yōkai Rally," he represented the USA, using dizziness powers to gain an advantage and finishing third after causing accidents. He later appeared in stories like "Kitarō’s Vietnam War," assisting Medama-Oyaji without holding past grudges, and "Yōkai Lockheed," reversing a witch’s hypnosis on Kitarō. In "Kitarō Kunitori Monogatari," he competed in a sumo tournament, cheating with his powers until Kitarō defeated him fairly.
The sixth anime expanded Backbeard’s background as the Western yōkai leader. A thousand years prior, he used his physical form in a significant battle. He groomed the witch sisters Adél and Agnès for his Brigadoon Project, aiming to strip global yōkai and transformed humans of free will, enslaving them to his empire. He sacrificed their mother to turn the Malay Peninsula into yōkai territory. Recognizing Agnès’ strong magical potential, he ordered Adél to prepare her as the project’s core. He later invaded Japan, torturing Adél to coerce Agnès’ cooperation and initiating the project to transform Japanese citizens. During the conflict, he battled Kitarō, assuming his physical form to relish inflicting pain, though the project was ultimately thwarted.
His abilities center on his eye: hypnotizing victims, countering others’ hypnosis, inducing dizziness, emitting heat beams to ignite targets, firing energy beams, and unleashing lightning bolts. His tentacles stab, bind, or capture foes, and he can grow limbs for physical tasks like sumo wrestling.
