Description
Kazuichi Soda attends Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B as the Ultimate Mechanic, celebrated for his extraordinary skill with machinery. He grew up in poverty, helping at his family's struggling bike shop where he honed his mechanical talents from childhood. Financial hardship and bullying prompted him to adopt a punk look—dyed hot pink hair hidden under a gray beanie, sharpened teeth, and screw-themed earrings—crafting an intimidating exterior that belied his anxious and emotionally vulnerable nature.
Before the Tragedy, Kazuichi endured significant trauma, including physical abuse from his father and betrayal by a close friend, fostering deep-seated trust issues. His mechanical genius often produced inventive but impractical creations, like converting a soccer field line-drawing machine into a runaway vehicle. At Hope's Peak, he initially struggled socially but forged a close bond with Hajime Hinata, considering him a "soul friend" despite moments of suspicion and conflict.
During the Killing School Trip on Jabberwock Island in *Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair*, Kazuichi repaired machinery, attempted escape plans such as modifying boats, and built Minimaru—a small robot tribute to Nekomaru Nidai. He displayed intense jealousy toward Gundham Tanaka over his infatuation with Sonia Nevermind, frequently making inappropriate comments about her while dismissing her occult interests. Kazuichi survived the killing game but was later exposed as a Remnant of Despair, brainwashed alongside his classmates after witnessing Chiaki Nanami's execution, an event orchestrated by Junko Enoshima using brainwashing techniques.
As a Remnant of Despair, Kazuichi adopted a darker appearance, removing his beanie and wearing black gloves. He committed violent acts, including killing civilians without remorse, as seen in *Danganronpa: Togami*. Despite this transformation, his superficial fixation on Sonia remained. The brainwashing was eventually reversed via the Neo World Program, though he retained memories of his deeds.
In *Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School*, Kazuichi appears in both Despair Arc and Hope Arc. During the brainwashing incident, he and his classmates were forced to watch Chiaki's execution on monitors laced with mind-altering effects, plunging them into despair. In Hope Arc, the rehabilitated Kazuichi and the other Remnants resurface to defend the Future Foundation from brainwashed attackers. Accepting responsibility for their past atrocities, they chose voluntary exile to Jabberwock Island to atone. This ending depicts them living peacefully, cooperatively utilizing their talents—Kazuichi likely maintaining machinery—under the condition of societal isolation.
Throughout his journey, Kazuichi's mechanical expertise remains central, evident in projects from building rockets to repairing complex devices. His personality blends comic relief with genuine loyalty and vulnerability, particularly in his reliance on Hajime and misguided efforts to impress Sonia. His arc resolves with redemption through lifelong penance on the island.
