Aoi Asahina, first recognized as the Ultimate Swimming Pro, enrolled in Hope's Peak Academy's Class 78th. Her exceptional talent surfaced early, breaking swimming records in elementary school and securing her status as an Olympic cadet. Her younger brother, Yuta Asahina, also competed but acknowledged her superior skill. Hope's Peak Academy scouted her directly from Asanaro High School. Trapped within the Killing School Life, Aoi forged a deep bond with Sakura Ogami, frequently sharing a dorm room to combat isolation after the killing game began. She witnessed pivotal moments, including the discovery of Alter Ego, an AI crafted by Chihiro Fujisaki, which she first believed was a ghost. The deaths of classmates, particularly Sakura Ogami's suicide orchestrated by Monokuma's forged note, devastated Aoi. Consumed by grief, she attempted to frame herself as the murderer to provoke a mass execution, seeking vengeance against those who ostracized Sakura. This plan failed, ultimately leading to reconciliation among the survivors. After Junko Enoshima was exposed as the mastermind and the game ended, Aoi left the academy determined to move forward, guided by Sakura's conviction to face adversity. Escaping Hope's Peak, Aoi learned her brother Yuta had been captured by Ultimate Despair during the Tragedy. He later died during an escape attempt from Towa City when his Monokuma bracelet detonated while he swam across the bay. Aoi joined the Future Foundation's 13th Branch, focusing on frontline food and resource distribution. Her title became Former Ultimate Swimming Pro after leaving the academy. Aoi participated in the Final Killing Game targeting the Future Foundation directors. She remained allied with Makoto Naegi and Kyoko Kirigiri throughout the lethal traps and betrayals. The conflict concluded with Ryota Mitarai activating a hope-inducing video. Alongside fellow survivors, Aoi rejected both despair and forced hope, choosing instead to rebuild society through collective effort. This resolution marked her progression from grief-driven vengeance to actively restoring stability, honoring Sakura's legacy by confronting challenges with determination. Her journey consistently involved loyalty, resilience, and maintaining hope amidst profound loss.
