Description
Setsuna Kiryu emerged from the lawless Inside district, treated as organ stock by his wealthy biological father. He endured confinement and abuse until a young Tokita Ohma intervened violently during a territorial dispute, killing his captors. Misinterpreting this act, Kiryu developed a consuming religious obsession, viewing Ohma as a god destined to destroy him for his perceived sins. To fund his relentless search for Ohma, he engaged in child prostitution, securing resources and connections. He later located and killed his biological father, stealing his wealth to continue his pursuit. This quest brought him back to the Inside two years later, where he discovered Ohma had been trained by Tokita Niko, whom Kiryu perceived as a devil corrupting his god. During this time, he encountered "The Other Tokita Niko," who taught him elements of the Niko Style and directed him to martial artist Taira Genzan. Kiryu became Genzan's student, mastering the Koei Style.
Outwardly polite and friendly, Kiryu masks a profoundly unstable psyche. His obsession with Ohma manifests as intense religious fervor; he desires destruction at Ohma's hands while harboring irrational hatred towards Tokita Niko. Overuse of the Niko Style's "Fallen Demon" technique induced severe psychosis, causing him to hallucinate Niko in others and believe he must kill these manifestations. Although freed from these hallucinations by Ohma after the Kengan Annihilation Tournament, his personality darkened. He shifted focus to grooming Gaoh Ryuki as a new "god," mentoring him in the Koei Style to prepare him to defeat Ohma.
Kiryu possesses an effeminate appearance with long black hair framing his face, gentle livid-colored eyes, and highly defined musculature, earning him the alias "The Beautiful Beast" – reflecting the contrast between his striking looks and his beastly, ruthless combat style. Two years after the tournament, he adopted a shorter bob-cut hairstyle reminiscent of his youth.
He represented the Koyo Academy Group in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament. Kiryu effortlessly defeated Ozu Toshio in a qualifier. His first official match was against Nikaido Ren; provoked by Ren comparing him to a deceased acquaintance, Kiryu defeated him, issuing a threat rooted in distorted views on life and death, indifferent to whether Ren yielded or died. In the second round, he faced Kuroki Gensai. Kiryu initially pressured Kuroki with relentless assaults, demonstrating remarkable adaptability by creating the "True Rakshasa's Palm" mid-fight and using it to twist his heart away from Kuroki's lethal "Devil Lance." He was ultimately defeated and severely injured. Following this loss, he wandered the Kengan Dome during Hayami Katsumasa's coup, indiscriminately killing Guardians under the delusion he was protecting others from Niko. He attempted to kill Yamashita Kazuo, mistaking him for Niko, but was stopped by Ohma. Their confrontation revealed conflicting accounts of their shared past, culminating in Ohma dominating the fight, countering Kiryu's Fallen Demon state, and subduing him. Kiryu was imprisoned but later escaped detention, vanishing without a trace.
Two years later, during the Kengan Association VS Purgatory Tournament, Kiryu reappeared. He approached a despondent Gaoh Ryuki, identifying himself as "just a man who lost his beloved, forever." After listening to Ryuki's grief, Kiryu drew parallels between them, questioning if Ryuki was willing to "go through hell for his loved one," signaling his intent to mentor Ryuki as Ohma's replacement.
A prodigious martial artist, Kiryu mastered the lethal Koei Style technique "Rakshasa's Palm" in one year—a feat typically requiring eight. He modified the technique, rotating his wrists 360 degrees for greater lethality compared to his master's 180-degree rotation, though this made it more predictable. His signature moves include "Blink," exploiting an opponent's blinks to create the illusion of disappearing, and "Rakshasa's Sole," a propulsion kick. He innovated techniques like the "True Rakshasa's Palm" (focusing rotational force into fingertips) and "Mingling of the Tiger and Fox" (combining Rakshasa's Palm with the Niko Style's "Swimming Swallow"). He utilizes Niko Style techniques: "Flashfire" for misdirection, "Indestructible" for damage reduction, "Raging Fire" for bursts of speed, "Weeping Willow" for redirection, and "Swimming Swallow" for unpredictable strikes. The involuntary "Fallen Demon" technique heightens his reaction speed during critical danger but previously caused debilitating hallucinations. His combat prowess allows him to pressure elite fighters like Ohma and Kuroki. He demonstrates exceptional stealth, evidenced by his prison escape and ability to infiltrate secure locations undetected.
