Description
Heiji Hattori, a 17-year-old high school detective from Osaka, holds the title "Great Detective of the West," rivaling Shinichi Kudo's "Great Detective of the East." Son of Osaka Police Chief Heizo Hattori and Shizuka Hattori, his detective passion sparked in childhood through solving neighborhood cases like finding lost cats. By his teens, he'd cracked over 1,200 cases. He also captains his school's kendo team.

Sporting dark brown spiky hair and tanned skin inherited from his paternal grandfather, Heiji wears a backward Osaka baseball cap to support his hometown team—flipping it forward during investigations. His thick Kansai dialect often betrays impersonation attempts, like mimicking Shinichi Kudo.

Heiji first confronted Shinichi during Tokyo's "Diplomat Murder Case." After Shinichi (temporarily restored to his teenage form) solved it, Heiji acknowledged his rival's skill but later uncovered Conan Edogawa's true identity as Shinichi. This forged a partnership where Heiji aids Conan's secret-keeping and collaborates on cases, though he risks exposure by accidentally calling Conan "Kudo" publicly.

Lighthearted yet impulsive, Heiji injects humor into investigations but prioritizes rescuing victims over preserving crime scenes—a habit criticized by detective Saguru Hakuba. Heiji argues a detective's core duty is preventing death. He fiercely shields friends like Kazuha Toyama and Conan/Shinichi from danger.

He shares an unbreakable bond with childhood friend Kazuha Toyama, forged when they were handcuffed together for days without a key. Kazuha later crafted twin good-luck charms from the cuffs' chains, worn by both. Though mutually romantically inclined, Heiji initially overlooks Kazuha's confessions. His protectiveness peaks in life-risking acts, like refusing to drop her during a cliff fall despite injury. He recognizes his feelings during the "Ebisu Bridge" incident, vowing to confess properly later.

Heiji assists Conan in Black Organization probes—investigating figures like Jodie Starling or Eisuke Hondou—and impersonates Shinichi to maintain Conan's cover, despite dialect hurdles. Off-duty, he champions Osaka's culture and cuisine to Conan.

He relies on Kazuha's charm, exemplified when he dreamt of Shinichi's murder and insisted Conan wear it; the charm deflected a knife meant for Shinichi, saving his life while Heiji took a bullet. Though mocking superstitions, he privately cherishes the talisman.

His moral code prizes life above all. Inspired by Conan's view that failing to prevent suicide equals murder, Heiji intervenes to stop culprits from ending their lives, extending justice beyond deduction.
