Hina Wada, a 17-year-old Haido High School student, ranks as the second-best karateka in the Kanto Region for her age group, consistently placing directly behind Ran Mouri. Hina views Ran as her rival, though Ran does not reciprocate this competitive intensity. Her karate journey began with a fascination for extraterrestrial life, training in the hope of encountering a powerful alien opponent. This persistent UFO and alien fixation remains a defining trait, leading her to interpret unusual events through an otherworldly lens. Physically similar in height to Ran, Hina has black hair styled with bangs attached to a band on her left side. She typically wears her school's blue karate tracksuit or casual attire: a jean jacket, turtleneck, and jogging pants. During competitions, she dons a white karate gi bearing the Haido High School logo. Key events include witnessing a cigar-shaped black mass in the sky during summer karate training camp, which she reported as a UFO sighting to Kogoro Mouri, involving her in a subsequent Haido Park murder investigation. Prior to this, she publicly subdued a purse snatcher in the Haido Shopping District, disarming him after he brandished a pocket knife – an act observed by Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri. She later faced Ran in the finals of a Kanto regional karate tournament. Though gaining an initial advantage, Hina lost after Ran became motivated by Shinichi's abrupt departure to investigate a case. Hina uses the nickname "Ranmaru" for Ran, alluding to the historical figure Mori Ranmaru. Outside competition, they maintain a cordial relationship, with Ran acknowledging Hina as a formidable opponent. She respects her upperclassman Makoto Kyogoku, addressing him as "Kyogoku-senpai," but expresses disapproval regarding his romantic relationship with a wealthy girl. Her name incorporates references to celestial bodies, specifically the sun, aligning with the naming theme of characters from her debut case.
