Description
Born into the secretive Black Organization as Shiho Miyano, she was the daughter of scientists Elena Miyano (English) and Atsushi Miyano (Japanese), who died in an accident during her childhood while working on the organization's "Silver Bullet" project. A child prodigy, she studied in the United States before returning to Japan to continue her parents' research. By age 13, she served the organization as scientist "Sherry" (named after the alcoholic drink). Around 18, she developed the untraceable poison APTX 4869. During testing, she observed a lab mouse shrink instead of dying but concealed this outcome. The organization deployed APTX 4869 for murders and human trials, including on Shinichi Kudo. After his disappearance, she deduced his shrinkage upon finding his childhood clothes missing during a house search and falsified his status as "deceased" in records to protect him.

Disillusioned by APTX 4869’s misuse for murder and shattered by her sister Akemi Miyano’s unexplained death, Shiho halted her research. Imprisoned for execution, she ingested APTX 4869 to commit suicide but shrank to a child’s form. Escaping, she collapsed near Shinichi’s house and was rescued by Professor Agasa—who knew her parents but was unaware they had children or organizational ties. He adopted her, and they created the alias "Ai Haibara": "Haibara" from "Gray" (referencing Cordelia Gray), and "Ai" from V.I. Warshawski and Irene Adler, initially using the kanji for "sorrow."

As Ai Haibara, she attends Teitan Elementary School with Conan Edogawa (Shinichi’s shrunken form) and joins the Detective Boys as second-in-command. She revealed her identity and role in creating APTX 4869 to Conan during their first case, facing initial hostility before earning his trust. She works on an APTX 4869 antidote, hampered by lost research data. After the organization discovered her location and attempted to kill her aboard a train, Conan, Subaru Okiya, Yukiko Kudo, and Kaitou Kid executed a counterplan involving an explosion that faked her death, securing her secret identity.

Haibara displays a calm, intelligent, and sarcastic demeanor. Initially cynical and distant after escaping the organization, she gradually warms through bonds with the Detective Boys, Professor Agasa, and Ran. She speaks and acts older than her apparent age, with broad knowledge in fields like theology and history. Protective of friends, she considers herself a danger due to her past and would sacrifice herself for their safety. She fears the Black Organization—particularly Gin and Vermouth—and deeply misses Akemi. She curbs Conan’s recklessness about his identity yet aids in concealing it from Ran when necessary. She enjoys fashion, requesting Prada handbags and Fusae accessories during investigations, using a Prada phone case, and reading 'ComCom' magazine. She relished peanut butter and blueberry jelly sandwiches from her time in America but quit after Agasa caught her eating them during his low-calorie diet. She idolizes footballer Ryusuke Higo, relating to his departure from a "black organization" (Noir Tokyo) post-betrayal.
