Shuichi Akai is a 32-year-old FBI agent of British-American and Japanese descent, originally from England. As the eldest son of Tsutomu Akai, who vanished 17 years ago investigating the murders of Kohji Haneda and Amanda Hughes, and Mary Sera, he moved to the United States to study and joined the FBI, driven to uncover his father's fate. After seven years abroad, he returned to Japan, meeting his younger sister Masumi Sera for the first time; his other sibling is Shukichi Haneda. Five years before the present, Akai infiltrated the Black Organization using the alias Dai Moroboshi and the codename "Rye." To access Shiho Miyano (codenamed Sherry), he dated her sister, his cousin and low-ranking member Akemi Miyano. Though initially using Akemi, he developed genuine feelings, leading him to end his prior relationship with FBI partner Jodie Starling. His cover was blown when colleague Andre Camel exposed him. After Akemi was later killed by Gin, Akai declared Gin his personal enemy, cutting his signature waist-length hair "to freshen up" and adopting the ironic nickname "Koibito-kun" (lover) for him. Stoic, introverted, and mission-driven, Akai often prioritizes operations over personal connections, becoming more closed off after Akemi's death according to James Black. He exhibits social awkwardness, struggling emotionally; disguised as engineering graduate student Subaru Okiya (a persona facilitated by Yukiko Kudo), his attempts to approach Ai Haibara (Shiho's shrunken form) terrify her. Despite this, he shows loyalty through indirect actions, like leaving Jodie cryptic hints after faking his death or sending Masumi Jeet Kune Do training videos. Tall with sharp green eyes (blue in the manga), distinctive under-eye bags, and now shorter hair, Akai wears a black knit cap, a grey jacket over a black collared shirt, and black pants. He is left-handed, a heavy smoker, prefers bourbon, and wore a fedora in his youth, now worn by Masumi. Akai possesses exceptional abilities: - His deductive skills rival Shinichi Kudo's, solving Yusaku Kudo's cold case and deducing the Black Organization boss's identity. - He is the series' most skilled sniper, hitting targets at 700 yards—outranging organization snipers Chianti and Korn—and is "eye-bidextrous," using both eyes for aiming. - A Jeet Kune Do expert acknowledged by Masumi as "three times stronger" than her. - Proficient in driving, cooking, Morse code, origami, and disguise. Key relationships define him: - Akemi Miyano, his deceased lover and cousin, whose death fuels his vendetta. - Jodie Starling, his ex-partner, with whom he maintains an amicable professional dynamic despite unresolved feelings. - Conan Edogawa, a strategic ally whom Akai calls "Boya" (Boy), collaborating against the organization. - Rei Furuya/Bourbon, a bitter rival who believes Akai killed their comrade Scotch. After faking his death to protect CIA mole Hidemi Hondou, Akai lives as Subaru Okiya in the Kudo home, protecting Haibara per his promise to Akemi and aiding Conan. His mother, Mary Sera (also shrunken by the organization's poison), coordinates with him against their shared enemies. Dubbed "Silver Bullet" by the Black Organization's leadership for his threat level, Akai increasingly collaborates with allies like Conan, though his secretive planning strains personal ties, such as Masumi's unresolved grief over his faked death.
