Description
Yang Wen-li, a distinguished officer in the Free Planets Star Fleet, is renowned as one of humanity’s most exceptional military admirals. Born on April 4, 767 UC to a civilian merchant family, he grew up aboard his father Yang Tai-long’s interstellar trade vessel after his mother’s early death, journeying between Heinessen and Fezzan. At sixteen, he pursued historical studies until financial hardship following his father’s passing compelled him to enroll in a military academy. Initially struggling as a pilot cadet, he shifted to strategic studies after the dissolution of the War History Department, graduating mid-class in 787 UC.
As a Sub-lieutenant in 788 UC, Yang served under Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch on El Facil. When Imperial forces invaded, he defied orders to orchestrate the evacuation of three million civilians, earning the title "Hero of El Facil" and encountering future spouse Frederica Greenhill. Rapid promotions followed—first to Lieutenant, then Lieutenant Commander—leading to his role as counselor at the Econia POW camp, where he forged alliances with future key aides Fyodor Patrichev and Murai.
Joining the 8th Fleet in 789 UC, Yang contributed to the Fifth Battle of Iserlohn. By 794 UC, as a Captain at Fleet Headquarters, his actions in the Battle of Van-Fleet and Sixth Battle of Iserlohn secured his rise to Commodore. Assigned to the 2nd Fleet in 795 UC, he advised evading an atmospheric storm during the Battle of Legnica, a strategy ignored by superiors that precipitated fleet losses. His tactical ingenuity later enabled a diversionary strike on Iserlohn Fortress, capturing Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm to ensure Alliance retreat.
Post-Battle of Astarte in 796 UC, Yang’s acclaim as a strategist surged. Despite personal aspirations for historical scholarship, Fleet Admiral Sithole elevated him to Vice Admiral. His leadership during the Empire’s invasion and the Battle of Amritsar Starzone culminated in promotion to Admiral and command of Iserlohn Fortress, where he restructured the 13th Fleet into the Iserlohn Garrison Fleet.
Summoned to Heinessen in 798 UC for a political inquiry, Yang returned to repel High Admiral Reuenthal’s siege during the Eighth Battle of Iserlohn. After Fezzan’s annexation, he evacuated Iserlohn, bolstering Alliance remnants. Aligning with the El Facil Revolutionary Government in 799 UC, he spearheaded the recapture of Iserlohn in the Ninth Battle.
On June 1, 800 UC, en route to negotiations with Reinhard, Yang’s cruiser was ambushed by Terraists. Fatally wounded, he perished at 2:55.
A tactician who prioritized democratic ideals and minimal casualties, Yang Wen-li’s legacy endures through his transformative impact on Alliance military strategy and history.
