Description
Kakeru Naruse entered the world on September 14, 1994. His parents divorced early in his childhood, severing all ties with his father. He then lived with his mother in Tokyo, harboring deep resentment toward her for the family's dissolution—a resentment that persisted until he learned she left to protect them from abuse. His mother's mental health struggles created a complex, burdensome dynamic as she leaned heavily on him for emotional support.

His mother's suicide on his first day of high school became a defining trauma. Kakeru blamed himself entirely, believing his decision to socialize with new classmates instead of attending a hospital appointment caused it. Relocating to Matsumoto, Nagano, he moved in with his grandmother and transferred schools. This event plunged him into severe depression, characterized by constant self-blame, emotional withdrawal, and daily thoughts of ending his life. Though outwardly reserved and polite, he concealed intense guilt and felt he was a burden.

Academically integrated but emotionally isolated, Kakeru initially avoided connections. His classmates—Naho Takamiya, Hiroto Suwa, Azusa Murasaka, Takako Chino, and Saku Hagita—persistently included him, gradually drawing him into their circle. He demonstrated quiet perceptiveness, like noticing Naho's unspoken preference for a curry bun and discreetly exchanging his own. Skills in video games and athletics emerged, particularly running, where he was the fastest in his class. A brief romance with upperclassman Rio Ueda ended due to her manipulation and his developing feelings for Naho.

As friendships deepened, Kakeru occasionally revealed his struggles, including a suicide attempt by hanging after the school sports festival. His mental state deteriorated further upon discovering his mother's final text, expressing her belief that her absence would benefit him. This triggered a decisive suicidal crisis. On New Year's Eve, he intentionally steered his bicycle into a truck's path. However, in the revised timeline, intervention by his friends—combined with his own sudden fear of permanent separation from them—prevented his death. This pivotal moment allowed him to voice his pain and accept their support.

Following this crisis, Kakeru committed to recovery, openly acknowledging his depression while relying on his friends' solidarity. He reciprocated Naho's romantic feelings, leading to a relationship. Ten years later, they married and welcomed a son named Haru. This future starkly contrasted with an alternate timeline where his suicide succeeded, an outcome averted through letters sent back from that timeline's future.

Physically, Kakeru stood between 175–178 cm tall, weighed 65 kg, and possessed a slim build with dark hair and eyes. He wore standard school uniforms and exhibited habits like spacing out or avoiding physical contact on his neck. His favorite food remained curry.
