Shaushau is a small, black, furry creature dominated by a single large red and yellow eye, often concealed when its mouth opens. It communicates solely by vocalizing its name.

Functioning as Sandrat's pet and companion, Shaushau accompanies him on treasure hunts. Its behavior includes taunting others and aiding Sandrat in confrontations, such as frightening away wild creatures like Mofumofu during mountain climbs or in towns. This assistance recurs when Sandrat encounters groups of aggressive creatures blocking his path.

Shaushau travels with Sandrat to his hometown of Douga, engaging in activities like drinking milk at a bar. During trials at Douga's Soul Spot, Shaushau stays near Sandrat but does not participate in card battles or trials. Its role remains consistently supportive and non-combatant, aligned with Sandrat's pursuits without initiating independent actions. No significant evolution or background beyond this association exists across the series or related media.
