Description
Mitsuhide Rouen serves as primary aide to Prince Zen Wistaria of Clarines. Originally a low-born knight from the Sereg Knight Circle, Crown Prince Izana introduced him to Zen at age seventeen. Zen reacted coldly, perceiving Mitsuhide's appointment as another restriction on his freedom and suspecting Mitsuhide desired to serve Izana. Mitsuhide confronted this directly, expressing how Zen's remarks caused him hurt, an early sign of his forthright nature. Their bond solidified profoundly after Mitsuhide uncovered a plot by Zen's friend Atri, revealed as a spy for Lido rebels. Mitsuhide intervened in the confrontation, fatally wounding Atri to protect Zen. This event deeply impacted Zen, motivating him to earn genuine loyalty, while Mitsuhide pledged lifelong service.

Physically, Mitsuhide stands approximately 180 cm tall with a lean, muscular build noted as appealing. His hair appears graying black in the manga and sea blue or turquoise in the anime, complemented by hazel or brown eyes. His frame bears several scars, including a burn on his shoulder. He typically wears formal tunics, a protective gambeson, and high boots, carrying a longsword. At court events, he dons the royal knights' dress uniform.

Mitsuhide exhibits unwavering loyalty and fierce protectiveness toward Zen, frequently exhibiting parental concern. His personality blends calm reliability with an easily flustered reaction to teasing, especially from Zen, Kiki Seiran, or Obi. Despite natural charm making him popular among women, he remains oblivious to romantic advances. He explicitly prioritizes platonic bonds, stating marriage would conflict with his dedication to Zen. When Kiki proposed, he declined, comparing a union with her to "marrying Zen" and confirming his expectation to remain unmarried. This stance aligns with interpretations of Mitsuhide as aromantic, emphasizing deep platonic devotion over romantic entanglements.

His role extends beyond protection; he advises Zen on political matters and accompanies him on diplomatic missions. During the Tanbarun incident, he and Kiki incapacitated palace guards to aid Zen confronting Prince Raj. He also temporarily exhibited exaggerated loyalty after inhaling a hypnotic potion, reverting to formal address ("Zen-sama") and refusing to leave Zen's side until cured. Relationships within Zen's circle feature camaraderie: he engages in lighthearted banter, supports Shirayuki's pursuits, and endures Obi's teasing. His backstory remains sparingly detailed, with family origins unmentioned beyond a hometown near Sereg.

Notable trivia includes his preference for sweets and the origin of his surname, borrowed by Izana during an incident in Lilias. His name references the historical samurai Akechi Mitsuhide, without narrative parallels to betrayal. Mitsuhide's development consistently reinforces his core traits: steadfast loyalty, emotional transparency, and the prioritization of service alongside chosen family.
