Description
Arriving at Clarines' capital as a child prodigy due to his exceptional herbalism and pharmacology skills, Ryuu became the youngest court herbalist on record at Wistal Castle. His early life there was marked by isolation; others struggled to interact with him appropriately, often treating him as an adult or finding his intelligence unsettling, which sparked unfounded rumors about poison research. This hindered friendships, leading him to withdraw into his work while expressing a desire to mature quickly into a reliable pharmacist.

He possesses short, messy dark chestnut brown hair and aqua blue eyes. His attire is practical and age-appropriate, typically knickerbockers, black hose, and puffed boots, often with a scarf. After moving to Lilias, he frequently wears a lined winter poncho gifted by his mentor, Garak Gazelt. He later adopts a shorter haircut for easier maintenance.

Calm, mature, and initially detached, Ryuu struggles with empathy and understanding strong emotions, compounding his social awkwardness. Exposure to new environments and relationships fosters greater social awareness, making him more observant, communicative, and open over time, though he retains his quiet nature.

Specializing in plant-based medicines and toxins, Ryuu holds a particular fascination for poisonous plant interactions that ignited his interest in medicinal herbs. He mentors Shirayuki after she passes the palace herbalist exam, collaborating on herb gathering and research. His work takes him to Lilias twice: first to address an illness caused by toxic Olin Maris, where he befriends Kirito, a boy his age; and later to research neutralizing the plant's toxicity while preserving its bioluminescence. This research succeeds in creating a non-toxic variant named Phostyrias. During this period, joint pain signals a growth spurt, leading to increased height and physical maturity after a 10-month timeskip.

Ordered back to Wistal Castle after the Olin Maris project, Ryuu instead chooses to remain in Lilias indefinitely, joining Shirayuki and Obi to distribute Phostyrias across the Wilant region, reflecting his commitment to practical fieldwork and evolved independence.

Key relationships shape him:
* **Garak Gazelt**: His mentor and parental figure; her guidance and trust significantly impact his confidence. Ryuu credits his growth to her, stating it happened "because I got to know you."
* **Shirayuki**: Initially his apprentice, their bond deepens into mutual respect and familial care; she acts as a supportive older sister figure, helping him navigate social challenges.
* **Obi and Zen**: He forms trusting friendships with both, often collaborating with Obi in Lilias.
* **Kirito**: His first peer friend, met during the initial Olin Maris crisis, providing age-appropriate camaraderie.

He falls asleep instantly in a "home position" under his desk when his concentration breaks, cannot cook, and has low physical stamina. He admires the Yura Shigure plant for its red color and toxicity under unsuitable conditions, keeping a specimen in his office—a subtle nod to Shirayuki's hair.
