Description
Zen Wisteria Clarine is the second prince of Clarines, born to Queen Haruto and the late King Kain Wistaria, with Crown Prince Izana as his older brother and Shinsu Jiran as his uncle. His royal childhood involved being used as political leverage against Izana and surviving assassination attempts, fostering deep trust issues and a belief that genuine friendship was impossible. At 13, during a rebellious phase, Izana assigned Mitsuhide Rouen as his aide. Zen initially resented Mitsuhide, responding coldly. Around this time, Zen secretly befriended Atri, a castle archer, viewing their meetings as a precious escape. This friendship ended in betrayal when Atri, revealed as a Lido clan spy aiding an assassination plot against Izana, expressed jealousy of Zen's privilege and attempted to shoot him. Mitsuhide intervened, fatally wounding Atri, who died lamenting Zen's royal status as a barrier to true friendship. The event devastated Zen but motivated him to become a prince inspiring genuine loyalty, valued beyond his title. Mitsuhide's unwavering support solidified their bond, marking the start of Zen's journey toward meaningful relationships.

Physically, Zen has distinctive crystal blue eyes and silver-blonde hair (appearing white in the anime), styled in a medium-length cut with fringes past his eyebrows, consistent since childhood. He stands 176 cm (5'9") tall and weighs 62 kg (136 lbs). His attire alternates between formal royal garments bearing the Clarines crest for duties and simpler, well-tailored dark tops with light pants for personal time. He consistently wears a royal blue glove covering his left palm and middle finger and always carries his sword, reflecting his dual existence between royal obligation and personal identity.

Zen balances approachability with deep responsibility. He exhibits an easygoing, light-hearted nature, actively disliking status formalities, leading him to frequently sneak out of the castle to experience his kingdom firsthand, finding particular solace in nearby forests. Despite this, he demonstrates strong dedication to his princely duties, often compensating through intense work sessions. His traumatic past instilled a high value on trust and loyalty; he views aides and staff as friends, not subordinates. He shows significant protectiveness toward those he cares about, reacting with uncharacteristic intensity to threats. Zen possesses a strong sense of justice and compassion, intervening decisively against exploitation, such as confronting Viscount Blaker's mismanagement. He displays emotional vulnerability in intimate moments, especially around Shirayuki, showing embarrassment or mild jealousy. He dislikes daytime solitude, struggles with perfumes and colds, and had a childhood inability to drink milk. His leadership emphasizes earning respect through character over title.

Zen possesses near-immunity to most poisons, developed deliberately in childhood through controlled, documented exposures that induced convulsions, fever, and mobility issues. This immunity proved crucial when he consumed a poisoned apple intended for Shirayuki, sent by Prince Raj of Tanbarun. While temporarily affected, his resilience allowed him to confront Raj and leverage the diplomatic implications of the poisoning to secure Shirayuki's freedom.

Relationships form Zen's core development. His bond with Shirayuki begins when he encounters her fleeing Tanbarun to escape becoming Prince Raj's concubine, just inside Clarines' borders. After she treats an injury he sustains, mutual respect and friendship deepen into romantic love. Zen consistently supports Shirayuki's court herbalist career, respecting her independence while protecting her from dangers like kidnappings. He has expressed intentions to propose, acknowledging complications from their differing statuses, stating vows to protect their shared wish to be together.

With his aides, Zen shares profound trust and camaraderie. Mitsuhide Rouen, initially assigned by Izana, transitioned from a resented guardian to Zen's closest friend and swordsmanship trainer following the Atri incident. Kiki Seiran, another aide and Seiran family heir, earns Zen's respect for her loyalty and skill. Both Mitsuhide and Kiki serve as near-constant companions for over five years, with Izana and Haruto noting Zen's reliance on their presence even during family interactions. Obi, a former outlaw sent to intimidate Shirayuki, later pledged loyalty to Zen. Zen grows fond of Obi, metaphorically holding his "reins" to prevent his return to obscurity, eventually knighting him as a personal royal knight despite his lack of formal training, reflecting Zen's value of personal merit over tradition.

Regarding family, Zen maintains a complex dynamic with Izana. While Izana shows care through actions like assigning Mitsuhide, their interactions involve teasing or maneuvering, particularly concerning Shirayuki, whom Izana initially saw as a complication but later accepted. Zen's relationship with Queen Haruto involves formal distance, though she recognizes his dependence on his aides.

Zen evolves from a prince escaping duties to understand his kingdom into a leader balancing personal connections with royal responsibilities. His commitment to Shirayuki strengthens, focusing on building a future together while respecting her profession. He continues to value and reinforce bonds with Mitsuhide, Kiki, and Obi, solidifying their roles as protectors and trusted friends. Ongoing challenges include navigating political expectations surrounding his relationship with Shirayuki and defining his role within Clarines' power structure as the second prince.
