TV Special
Description
Martine is a young and inexperienced Pokémon Trainer who first appears in the anime's Mega Evolution specials, including Pokémon: Mega Evolution Special III. She begins her journey in the Kalos region after being deeply impressed by the power of Alain's Mega Charizard X, deciding to follow him in the hope of finding Mega Stones and growing stronger herself. A beginner with a somewhat clumsy and naive nature, she is always accompanied by her Chespin, whom she nicknames Chespie. Her personality is warm, emotional, and caring, especially toward her Pokémon, though she can be fearful in dangerous situations, such as when she hesitates to approach the rampaging Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. Despite her initial timidity, she shows determination and loyalty, eventually following Alain into peril to support him.

Her role in the story is that of a traveling companion and moral anchor for Alain. She provides a humanizing counterpoint to his single-minded pursuit of Mega Evolution mastery. Her motivations evolve over time: initially driven by curiosity and admiration, she later becomes focused on saving her Chespin after it falls into a coma while helping a Zygarde Core escape from Team Flare's experiments. This event becomes a major emotional driver, and Alain's subsequent quest to understand Mega Evolution is partly motivated by a desire to help Chespie recover and restore Martine's smile.

Martine's key relationships include Alain, who initially tolerates her presence reluctantly but grows to care for her; Professor Sycamore, whom she consults for guidance; and Steven Stone, who assists them during their Hoenn adventure. She also captures a yellow-flowered Flabébé, which she nicknames Bébé, expanding her team modestly.

Her development is evident as she transitions from a passive follower to someone who openly questions Alain's alliance with Lysandre and insists on understanding his true motives. She demonstrates courage by stepping out of hiding to help Alain during the clash between the Primal Legendary Pokémon and Mega Rayquaza. Later, she watches Alain's battles from afar, including his defeat in the World Coronation Tournament, and reacts with visible sadness but continued support.

Notable abilities are not heavily combat-oriented; her strengths lie in empathy, persistence, and her close bond with Chespie. Chespie knows Vine Whip, Pin Missile, and Toxic, and it is through this partnership that the story's most tender and dramatic moments unfold. By the end of the specials and later appearances in the main series, Chespie fully recovers, and Martine remains a steadfast friend to Alain.
