TV-Series
Description
Mitsuba Sangū is a member of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and a lieutenant assigned to the Moon Demon Squad, specifically serving under Shinoa Hiragi's command during the Nagoya campaign. She belongs to the prestigious and influential Sanguu clan, a family with significant standing within the Imperial Demon Army's hierarchy, and is the younger sister of Aoi Sangū, a special duty second lieutenant. Mitsuba has been part of the Vampire Extermination Unit since the age of thirteen, making her one of the more experienced soldiers in her squad despite her relatively young age.
Her personality is marked by a strict, by-the-book approach to military conduct. She is serious, disciplined, and deeply values teamwork and proper formation during battle. This emphasis on following orders and working cohesively as a unit stems directly from a traumatic event early in her career: she once made a self-centered decision that led to the death of a fellow squad member. This failure left her with profound survivor's guilt, and from that point onward, she became determined never to let personal recklessness endanger her comrades again. Because of this, she can come across as overbearing or proud, especially when interacting with soldiers who disregard protocol or act independently, as she initially does with Yuichiro Hyakuya. However, beneath this rigid exterior, she is a kind and emotionally vulnerable young woman who genuinely cares for the safety of those around her.
Mitsuba's motivations are deeply tied to her family name and her own sense of self-worth. She carries a powerful inferiority complex, particularly in comparison to her older sister Aoi, who is a highly accomplished and respected officer. Mitsuba often feels that she has not earned her position through her own merit and that her achievements are attributed more to her family's reputation than to her actual ability. This drives her to push herself harder than necessary, sometimes to the point of recklessness, in an effort to prove that she deserves her rank and respect on her own terms. Her core desire is to overcome the shadow of her sister and the expectations of the Sanguu clan, and to find a place where she is valued for who she is rather than for her lineage.
In the story of the Nagoya campaign, Mitsuba serves as a member of the squad tasked with infiltrating the city and engaging the vampire nobles. She acts as a voice of tactical reason within the group, often clashing with Yuichiro's impulsive nature. As the battle progresses and the true nature of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army's darker machinations becomes clear, Mitsuba undergoes a significant shift. She ultimately chooses to defy the military hierarchy that has controlled her life, siding with her squadmates and abandoning the organization she was raised to serve. This decision marks a turning point where she prioritizes the bonds she has formed over the rigid loyalty to her clan and the army.
Her key relationships are central to her growth. With Shinoa Hiragi, she shares a long-standing friendship built on mutual understanding and the ability to genuinely insult one another without malice. Shinoa is one of the few people with whom Mitsuba can be completely honest. Her dynamic with Yuichiro Hyakuya is particularly important, as he represents the kind of reckless trust in others that she initially despises but eventually comes to admire. She develops romantic feelings for him, though she does not actively pursue them, recognizing that his heart lies elsewhere and valuing the bond of their squad as a family above personal desire. Her relationship with her sister Aoi is the most fraught and defining of her life. Aoi represents the unattainable ideal that Mitsuba has been chasing, and their eventual confrontation forces Mitsuba to finally break free from that cycle of comparison and assertion of her own path.
Regarding her development, Mitsuba transforms from a soldier who defines herself by rules, rank, and family obligation into an individual who chooses loyalty to her chosen family over institutional authority. She learns to trust her comrades and accept that relying on others is not a weakness but a strength. She overcomes the guilt of her past failure by proving to herself that she can protect those she cares about without losing them. By the end of the Nagoya arc and beyond, she has shed much of the elitist armor she wore and stands as a more grounded and self-assured person.
In terms of notable abilities, Mitsuba is a highly skilled combatant who wields a Cursed Gear known as Tenjiryuu, a massive battle axe that requires significant physical strength to handle effectively. She is a capable leader with strong tactical instincts, particularly in coordinating squad movements during intense battles. Her greatest ability, however, may be her emotional resilience. Having faced the trauma of causing a comrade's death, the pressure of her family name, and the betrayal of the institution she served, she repeatedly finds the strength to continue fighting and to redefine what she is fighting for. She is also depicted as a poor cook, a minor but consistent trait that highlights her more human and relatable side away from the battlefield.
