Shahal began as a human painfully transformed into a vampire by the progenitor Ferid Bathory. This change unleashed an uncontrollable bloodlust, causing him to accidentally drain his sister Lana's blood—a traumatic event he repressed and could not accept, making his guilt over her death a defining psychological burden. Physically, Shahal had tanned skin, long blonde hair tied back, distinctive red eyes marking a vampire who consumed human blood, pointed ears, and fangs. He wore the typical white attire signifying his status among vampires. His personality was profoundly unstable and obsessive. Mistaking a human girl named Riko for his dead sister Lana, he kidnapped her to fulfill a delusional need for protection. Despite his nature, he refused to drink Riko's blood, revealing lingering humanity and compassion. This neutrality towards humans set him apart, evoking sympathy from both Riko and Yuichiro Hyakuya. His mental state deteriorated as he swung between aggressive protectiveness—attacking anyone threatening Riko—and moments of tenderness, like comforting her when she fell. His inability to reconcile vampiric instincts with human emotions fueled his descent into madness, culminating in overwhelming guilt and a desire for redemption. Key events involved Shahal capturing Riko and subsequent clashes. After seeing Riko during a vampire attack, he slaughtered the assailants and took her to a cathedral hideout. Confronted by vampire nobles Ferid Bathory and Crowley Eusford, Ferid bit Riko to provoke Shahal's repressed memory of killing Lana, intensifying Shahal's resolve to flee with her. Shinoa’s squad, dispatched by Guren Ichinose, intervened to rescue Riko while vampire assassins arrived to eliminate Shahal for treason. During the battle, Shahal hid Riko for safety but was pursued by Yuichiro. Their fight led Shahal, in a trance-like state, to nearly strike Riko. Horrified by this near-fatal mistake and recognizing his lost humanity, he tearfully begged Yuichiro to kill him, believing death would allow him to become human again in the afterlife and reunite with Lana. Yuichiro complied, delivering a fatal blow. Shahal dissipated with a smile, apologizing to Lana for making her wait. As a vampire, Shahal possessed standard abilities: superhuman strength, rapid regeneration, immortality, and enhanced speed. His combat prowess allowed him to effortlessly eliminate squads of vampire hunters and assassins, wielding a one-handed sword in battle. His strength rivaled other incomplete vampires like Mikaela Hyakuya, attributed to his lineage from the high-ranking progenitor Ferid. Shahal’s relationship with Riko was defined by his delusion; he insisted she was Lana, dismissing her protests and fears. His protectiveness stemmed from guilt over Lana’s death, yet Riko grew sympathetic, recognizing his residual humanity and shielding him. His dynamic with Ferid was adversarial; Ferid’s manipulations exacerbated Shahal’s trauma, highlighting Shahal’s unresolved pain and defiance against his creator.
