Description
Winston the White Weasel serves as the primary antagonist throughout media adaptations stemming from Atsuo Saitō's 1972 novel. Commanding an army of weasels, his brutal reputation instills widespread fear. A previous encounter left the mouse Rusty severely traumatized and physically scarred.

His invasion of Dream Island launches a significant campaign of terror, driving the native mouse population into hiding along rocky shores. His forces simultaneously attack indigenous bird populations, destroying eggs as part of their oppressive tactics. Winston displays strategic cunning, swiftly deducing mouse hideouts after sensing the loss of one soldier near the cliffs.

Initially presenting a humble, polite, and enigmatic demeanor, Winston employs a charismatic facade to manipulate enemies, masking his true nature: cruel, deceitful, and sadistic. He excels at sowing doubt and despair. Rarely showing fear or concern, his extreme arrogance leads him to underestimate adversaries with contempt. This arrogance ignites into uncontrolled rage when challenged, especially following near-defeats he perceives as insults.

A key tactic involves a deceptive peace ceremony where Winston and his weasels perform a hypnotic dance. Utilizing his hypnotic eyes, he mesmerizes most mice, luring them toward the water's edge with fatal intent. The intervention of Clarence, the island's mouse leader, disrupts this plan. Winston responds by psychically commanding a subordinate to fatally attack Clarence, drowning him, cementing his merciless nature.

In subsequent battles, Winston exhibits predatory enjoyment, explicitly stating his pleasure in "playing with his food like a child." He dismisses the death of his own soldiers, showing greater interest in the novelty of a mouse defeating a weasel than concern for his forces. His cruelty springs from finding inherent fun in murder and oppression, not mere survival needs, with indications these tendencies existed since childhood.

His eventual defeat results from an alliance between the mice and the birds they previously victimized. Forced underwater during combat, he resurfaces in furious rage, leading to a final confrontation. Though injuring several birds and nearly strangling one named Clarissa, the coordinated efforts of the mouse protagonist Gavin and the birds overpower him. A large wave engulfs Winston and the mice clinging to him. While the mice are rescued, Winston struggles before succumbing to the ocean depths, ending his tyranny.
