Description
Lord Enma, also known as Kouen, rules the Yo-kai World, inheriting the title from his deceased grandfather, Ancient Enma. His existence stems from a fusion: Itsuki Takashiro, a human temporarily reincarnated as a ghost, merged with the benevolent aspect of Shien, a prince of the Mikado tribe, after a conflict with Soronaki. This fusion created Enma's child form, while Shien's malice birthed his younger half-brother, Lucas Schiffer.

Physically, Enma appears as a youthful humanoid Yo-kai with ruddy skin, amber eyes, and spiky blond hair. He traditionally wears royal attire: a red long-sleeved garb, a maroon sash with gold trim across his chest, and a blue-gray waist skirt. He often adopts a human disguise featuring tanned skin, brown eyes, and black hair, dressed in casual clothes with ornamental accents. In later timelines like *Y School Heroes*, his appearance matures; he stands taller than most students but shorter than adults, wearing more intricate clothing: a red-and-black jumpsuit adorned with sun and moon symbols, a dark blue sash bearing the "王" (king) kanji, and a black mantle with neon green lines.

Enma's personality blends curiosity, informality, and a strong sense of justice. Fascinated by human culture, he frequently visits the human world incognito to observe Yo-kai-human interactions, sometimes neglecting royal duties. He values firsthand experiences with his subjects and forms genuine friendships, notably with the human Nate. However, he possesses a formidable temper; witnessing the apparent death of his loyal assistant Zazel triggered his first Awakening, a state of rage where he nearly killed the perpetrator. His leadership emphasizes reconciliation and progress, reforming Yo-kai World laws to encourage human-Yo-kai friendships after confronting Zazel's opposition.

Enma wields significant powers, primarily through the Enma Blade, a sword enveloped in hellfire "thousands of times hotter" than human flames, which drastically boosts his physical strength. His abilities include signature techniques like the "Enma Orb" and specialized transformations:
- **Enma Awoken**: Achieved during extreme fury, granting lightning-based attributes.
- **Solar Enma** and **Infinite Enma**: Fire and lightning-attribute forms focused on smiting evil or creating error-free worlds.
- **Umbral Enma**: A drain-attribute form ruling the void.
- **Yasha Enma**: A fusion state with Shien, later splitting into variants like Rasetsu and Benibana.
- **Bousou Enma**: A "rampaging" form.
In *Yo-kai Watch Blasters*, unique bracelets allow him to shift combat roles (Tank, Healer, Ranger) with corresponding abilities.

Key relationships define his narrative:
- **Nate Adams**: Their bond begins when Enma, disguised, tests Nate by orchestrating his temporary death and transformation. Enma later battles Nate officially during the Enma Note quest, initially exploiting their friendship to bypass the Note's effects but ultimately acknowledging Nate as a "true friend."
- **Zazel**: Initially distrustful of Enma's pro-human policies, Zazel attempts a coup. After a decisive battle where Enma demonstrates commitment to coexistence, Zazel becomes his steadfast ally, assisting in governance and fighting alongside him against threats.
- **Ancient Enma**: Enma reveres his grandfather, though their ideologies differ—Ancient Enma distrusted human-Yo-kai bonds, while Enma actively promotes them.
- **Lucas Schiffer**: Enma's half-brother, initially sealed away until discovered during a quest in *Yo-kai Watch 3*. Their familial connection remains complex.

In the *Shadowside* and *Y School Heroes* timelines, Enma sacrifices himself to combat the cataclysmic Overseer storm, resulting in the Yo-kai World's destruction. His spirit survives by transferring into the human girl Emma Daiouji, gradually regenerating bioenergy within her body. He re-emerges intermittently to guide allies against alien invaders, eventually regaining a physical form and uniting with Zazel to restore the Yo-kai World. During this era, he adopts the alias "Enmadai Rijichou" as president of Y-Academy.

His lineage places him within the Enma tribe, which recently supplanted the Oni tribe as rulers. Notable ancestors include the 12th Enma, Jaou Kaira (a half-human antagonist later reconciled), and figures like Enma Meiou Maka (2nd Enma) and Enma Ryuuou Mizuchi (9th Enma), who sealed the Fudoraimeken sword across generations.
