Hidabat, originally known as Hikikōmori in Japanese, is a bat-like Yo-kai of the Shady tribe, possessing a Wind attribute in earlier games before its reclassification to the Onnen tribe in *Yo-kai Watch 4*. It has dark fur, a yellow-gold collar, and blue wings marked with golden-yellow hash symbols, the wings connected to its arms by bands on its palms.
This Yo-kai is shy and reclusive by nature, preferring dark, secluded spaces and often depicted using a laptop. When inspiriting humans, it induces feelings of gloom and a powerful urge to withdraw into darkness, turning them into shut-ins afraid of the outside world.
In the games, Hidabat appears as a playable character in locations like the Abandoned Tunnel on Mount Wildwood and various labyrinths. It evolves through fusion: combining with Tengloom creates Abodabat, and with Wydeawake it becomes Allnyta. A special evolution into Abodabat also occurs when fused with a Comfy Closet in *Yo-kai Watch Blasters*. In battle, Hidabat uses attacks such as Slap and the Wind-based Tornado. Its Soultimate Move, Hidabat Harmony, hinders enemies with a cursed lullaby, while its Inspirit, Shut Away, drains an opponent’s motivation. The Vampiric skill allows it to absorb health through regular attacks.
In the anime, Hidabat first inspirits Jibanyan, causing him to lock himself in Nate’s room. After Nate resolves the situation, Hidabat accepts an offer to live permanently in Nate’s closet as a dark refuge, in exchange for its Yo-kai Medal. It later demonstrates the ability to transport Nate’s closet to various locations when needed.
A major story arc reveals Hidabat as a fabulously wealthy business figure with vast stock market investments, ownership of corporations including Yo-Zon, Mog Mog Burger, and Hidabank, control of a massive network of underground closets, and ownership of a sports team called the Hida Baseball Bats. This empire collapses in *Yo-kai Watch!* EX034 due to poor investments, leading to bankruptcy. Emotional distress from this event, intensified by Whisper’s questioning, triggers a forced evolution into Abodabat, who traps Nate and his friends in another dimension. After being defeated and surrendering his Keystone, Hidabat reverts to its original form and recovers financially through insurance claims related to the incident.
The name Hidabat combines “hide” or “hideout” with “bat,” and its Japanese name, Hikikōmori, puns on the term for social recluse, reflecting its theme of isolation and fear of the outside world.
