TV-Series
Description
Katie Forester, known as Fumika Kodama in the original Japanese version, is a central figure in the Yo-kai Watch series. In the anime, she is an eleven-year-old student in Nate's class at Springdale Elementary, where she is portrayed as a kind, playful, and highly intelligent girl. She is popular among her peers and is often considered cute, possessing a natural charm and a cheerful demeanor. Even when influenced by mischievous Yo-kai, she typically retains her bright personality, though this can sometimes manifest as unintentional harshness, after which she seems to have no memory of her actions. Katie is also academically ambitious and carries a quiet worry about living up to her mother's expectations. Despite her many positive traits, one of her most defining characteristics is a profound obliviousness to romantic matters, which is a recurring source of humor and a key dynamic in her interactions with those around her.
In the anime, Katie primarily serves as the love interest for her classmate, Nathan "Nate" Adams. Nate is constantly trying to find ways to impress her, but his efforts are typically met with her referring to him as "average" in a friendly but honest way. She feels comfortable around him precisely because of his averageness, which she finds special, though she does not view him as a romantic partner. A running gag in the show involves Katie being inspirited by various Yo-kai, which frequently creates awkward or embarrassing situations that Nate must resolve. For example, the Yo-kai Tattletell once forced her to say embarrassing things about Nate in public, and Dismarelda made her profoundly sad by making her dwell on the death of her beloved pet hamster. Unlike in the video games, Katie does not possess a Yo-kai Watch in the main timeline of the anime and is generally unaware of the supernatural Yo-kai that cause these disruptions.
Katie also has several distinctive relationships with Yo-kai characters. The fox-like Kyubi, who has a reputation for charming women, repeatedly tries and fails to win her heart. In a reversal of his usual success, Katie appears to have complete immunity to his charms, remaining oblivious to his advances and even frustrating him by calling him a "QB" instead of his name. This has led to Kyubi becoming charmed by her instead. In a parallel universe depicted in Whisper's dream, an alternate version of Katie does own a Yo-kai Watch, and in that world, her companion is a surly, bad-tempered version of Jibanyan known as Baddinyan. This version of Katie takes a much more proactive and forceful approach to dealing with Yo-kai problems.
Physically, Katie is recognizable by her brown hair, which she almost always keeps tied in a high ponytail with a distinctive pink ribbon. She has black eyes and typically wears an outfit consisting of a cream-colored cardigan with teal trimmings, worn over a black-and-white striped top. She completes this look with blue shorts, dark grey socks, and black trainers. She reveals a surprising degree of bravery and is noted to be comfortable with heights. Her primary role in the story is not to battle Yo-kai herself, but to act as a catalyst for Nate's adventures, as his desire to protect her or resolve the strange situations she gets into is one of his main motivations for using his own Yo-kai Watch.
Looking at her development across different series, Katie's story progresses significantly in the Yo-kai Watch Shadowside timeline, which takes place thirty years after the original events. In this future, she is an adult named Katie Adams who has married her childhood friend, Nate. Together, they have two children, a daughter named Summer and a son named Tate. As a mother, she is shown to be caring and concerned for her family, maintaining her classic ponytail hairstyle, now slightly longer and tied with a simple pink ribbon instead of a bow. In the Shadowside film, she and her son Tate are temporarily transformed into a fearsome Kaodeka Oni, requiring her daughter to save them, demonstrating that the legacy of interacting with the Yo-kai world continues through the next generation.
