Description
Yoshiaki Taura captained the bicycle racing club at Kumamoto Daiichi High School, possessing a large, muscular frame and dark skin. His features included short black hair, thick eyebrows, heavy lower eyelids, sharp cheekbones, a large nose, and thick lips. Taura exhibited a loud, cheerful, and confident personality, often described as fiercely spirited. He demonstrated a slightly religious side by organizing team visits to Asofumoto Shrine to pray for victory before the Inter High, particularly for his injured teammate and fellow founding member Shin Yoshimoto, whom he regularly visited in the hospital after practice.
As captain, Taura actively encouraged his teammates and fostered unity, though he sometimes boasted about opponents' struggles. He granted trust readily to those who proved worthy but reacted with frustration to betrayal. During races, he respected strong opponents but could intimidate those facing difficulties. His cycling specialty was endurance, allowing him to maintain stamina over long distances. While no exceptional techniques were documented, he provided crucial support to teammates, assisting sprinter Shinya Ise and injured climber Masa Fujiwara during the Inter High's third-day uphill sections.
At the 41st Summer Inter High, Taura initially mocked perceived weaknesses in Sohoku High's riders. He later cooperated with Hiroshima Kureminami Tech's Eikichi Machimiya, agreeing to join a pack strategy targeting top schools. This cooperation was partly secured by Machimiya's tactic of nursing Fujiwara in the wind-protected center of the group. After the pack absorbed several top riders, Taura enthusiastically explained their plan to seize the lead. However, Machimiya's team betrayed and abandoned the pack, prompting Taura's reaction of stunned disbelief and visible distress. Despite this setback, Taura and Ise persevered, ultimately finishing the race ahead of the Hiroshima team.
