Description
Clemont's Dedenne, an Electric/Fairy-type Pokémon, was originally encountered wild in a forest near Lumiose City. Bonnie, Clemont's sister and too young to train Pokémon, found it adorable and urged Clemont to capture it. An initial attempt failed when a Fletchling stole Dedenne's berry, causing it to flee. Dedenne later reappeared, stealing food and triggering a chase that separated it alongside Ash's Pikachu. While evading Team Rocket and James's Inkay, Dedenne and Pikachu bonded, ultimately defeating them with a combined Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt. Clemont then successfully captured Dedenne, which remained primarily under Bonnie's care, often sleeping in her purse after meals or energy expenditure.
Dedenne displays a gluttonous nature, frequently seeking food and reacting strongly when deprived, as when Fletchling swallowed its berry. Timid in new situations, it forms deep bonds—especially with Bonnie and Pikachu. Dedenne communicates with Pikachu via electrical cheek signals, reflecting their sibling-like dynamic. It conserves energy by sleeping, sometimes inconveniently during Team Rocket confrontations, yet shows fierce loyalty and protectiveness. Notably, it defended Ash's Goomy against Team Rocket despite Goomy's Fairy-type fear, sparking a lasting friendship where Dedenne and Goodra later shared food and embraced. Dedenne expresses affection through nuzzling, occasionally shocking bystanders.
Bonnie serves as Dedenne's primary caretaker, with it resting in her hair or purse. Though officially Clemont's, daily care falls to Bonnie. Dedenne shares a mentor-like bond with Pikachu, learning through collaborative battles. Its friendship with Ash's Goodra endures, rooted in Dedenne's protection of Goomy. Dedenne also interacts with characters like Fairy-type Gym Leader Valerie, who surprises it by understanding Pokémon speech.
In combat, Dedenne uses Thunder Shock (often combined with Pikachu's Thunderbolt), Tackle, and Nuzzle. Its abilities—Pickup (finding items) and Cheek Pouch (health restoration via Berries)—support its habits. Physiologically, Dedenne emits communication waves from its whiskers and absorbs electricity through its tail when depleted, sometimes sneaking into homes to steal power. It stands 0'08" tall and weighs 4.9 lbs.
Dedenne features prominently across series. In *Pokémon the Series: XY* and *XYZ*, it locates missing Pokémon by detecting Pikachu's signals, participates in practice battles (like defeating Clemont's tripped Chespin), and experiences emotional turmoil during group separations—once fleeing distress until Bonnie promised future partnership. In *Pokémon Journeys: The Series*, it reunites with Ash and Pikachu, meets Goh, and watches Ash's World Coronation Series matches against Drasna and Leon.
Notable trivia includes Dedenne being the first recurring wild Pokémon caught by a main character besides Ash, the first Fairy-type owned by a main anime character, and Clemont's only Pokémon without an evolutionary line. Primarily Bonnie's charge, it remains Clemont's sole Electric-type unused in Gym battles.
