Description
Nyaruko originates as an extraterrestrial from the Nyarlathotep race, one of H. P. Lovecraft's Outer Gods. She takes humanoid form resembling a silver-haired girl with bright green eyes, pale skin, and a distinctive strand of hair atop her head that morphs with her emotions—curling into a heart during romantic moments or zig-zagging when angered. As an agent of the Space Defense Agency, she is dispatched to Earth to protect high school student Mahiro Yasaka from hostile aliens and traffickers targeting Earth's entertainment culture.
Adopting the identity "Nyaruko Yasaka," she poses as Mahiro's cousin to live in his household and attend his school, despite having previously graduated at the top of her class from a prestigious university. Her personality blends relentless optimism and a romantic obsession toward Mahiro—whom she claims to love at first sight—with brutal efficiency against threats, employing a weapon called the "Some Kind of Unspeakable Bar Thing" and Space CQC (Close Quarters Combat) techniques. In combat, she dons black-and-red armor and a helmet, with abilities including rapid summoning of interdimensional objects. She exhibits fourth-wall awareness, frequently references pop culture, and harbors deep obsessions with gaming and otaku subcultures.
Her relationship with Mahiro evolves from his initial annoyance at her advances to mutual care, particularly evident in the OVA "F." During an escape-room trap set by Atoko, Nyaruko is infected with space nano-machines that drain her powers and memories. As she deteriorates, Mahiro carries her while recounting their experiences, culminating in him initiating a kiss to restore her—a reversal of their typical dynamic. Though their memories of the incident fade, a later note reveals Mahiro's "bodily fluids" neutralized the nano-machines, implying deeper emotional reciprocity. This builds on earlier moments like Mahiro defending her or tolerating her presence.
Interpersonally, Nyaruko maintains complex ties: Kuuko (Cthugha) desires her romantically, though Nyaruko consistently prioritizes Mahiro. She allies with Hastur (Hasuta) and Kuuko as fellow "freeloaders" in Mahiro's home, balancing camaraderie with rivalry. Her tactical ingenuity surfaces in crises, such as when her powers fade in "F," persuading Mahiro to reject unethical deals even at the cost of her own existence.
Her background includes minor details like her unknown age—a topic she deflects—and her history with Kuuko as former classmates. Across all media, her character arc centers on protecting Mahiro while navigating human emotions, culminating in "F" with unambiguous confirmation of their mutual affection despite external absurdities and interdimensional threats.
