Movie
Description
Ashigara is a Fleet of Fog heavy cruiser, a Myoukou-class vessel from the First Oriental Fleet serving in the pursuit fleet led by Kongou and Hiei. Her Mental Model takes the form of a girl with long black hair, two locks of which twist into drill-like shapes framing her face, and red eyes. She wears jaw-like clips on either side of her head. Her usual attire is a variation of Hiei's school uniform, featuring an armband on the left forearm and a ribbon-framed Fleet of Fog emblem on the right sleeve. She also appears in the garb of a classic shrine maiden.
Impatient, brash, and prone to violence, Ashigara shows little restraint in tactical planning. She once proposed destroying the I-401 by dumping all available corrosive warheads into the ocean—a plan sister ship Myoukou rejected as inefficient and insane. This impulsiveness leads to forgetfulness, such as failing to activate a protective barrier during an underwater dive, nearly causing her to drown. She also possesses a sense of honor, considering it dishonorable to fight an enemy not at full strength.
Ashigara actively hunted the renegade I-401 alongside sister ship Nachi. Upon locating the target, she attacked immediately. The underwater battle proved disadvantageous, and though she requested Nachi’s support, their coordinated strike resulted in the I-401 disappearing into a debris cloud and a torpedo hitting Ashigara. Following orders to fall back and resupply, she stayed near flagship Kongou. When the I-401 attacked again, Ashigara intercepted torpedoes and sacrificed her own hull to shield Kongou from four corrosive warheads that broke through the defense line. As she sank, she convinced the heavy cruiser Atago to continue the fight against I-401.
Her Mental Model survived the vessel's destruction. Later, she recovered Haguro’s Union Core after it was swallowed by a goblin shark, which she punched and knocked out. Ashigara and Haguro eventually found themselves aboard the breached I-401, where they encountered an unconscious Iori Watanuki. Iona persuaded them to help the crew survive, since staying on the sinking submarine was not an option. Ashigara was assigned to assist Kyouhei Kashihara with weapons systems. She objected to Iona’s decision to retrieve the sinking Matsushima and its captain, Gunzou Chihaya, arguing that risking the whole crew for someone who might be dead was unwise. The crew sided with Iona. After the battle, Ashigara and Haguro were placed in a lifeboat and left at Iwo Jima, where they were found by Hyuuga’s robots.
She maintains loyalty to flagship Kongou and a respectful relationship with sisters Myoukou and Nachi. After her vessel was sunk, she pleaded with Atago, a heavy cruiser from Nagato’s fleet, to continue the fight. Ashigara views the I-401 primarily as a target to be sunk.
