Description
Erwin Smith, 13th Commander of the Scout Regiment, stood 188 cm tall with a muscular build. His appearance featured neatly parted blond hair, thick eyebrows, and icy blue eyes. He wore the standard military uniform, the Scouts' green cape, and an emerald bolo tie. After an encounter with the Armored Titan, he lost his right arm below the shoulder.

His childhood curiosity stemmed from his father, a history teacher who privately theorized the monarchy erased humanity's memories to control those within the Walls. Young Erwin's naive sharing of this theory led to his father's arrest, torture, and staged death by the Military Police. This cemented Erwin's lifelong quest to prove his father's theories about the world's truths. During cadet training, he befriended Nile Dok; both initially planned to join the Survey Corps, but diverged over a romantic interest. Erwin entered the Scouts while Nile joined the Military Police.

As a soldier, Erwin developed the Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation to reduce expedition casualties. Though initially rejected by Commander Keith Shadis, Erwin implemented it within his squad, gaining recognition for their high survival rates. His strategic innovations led Shadis to name him successor in 845.

Erwin displayed exceptional tactical acumen and a willingness to sacrifice lives for humanity's broader goals. He orchestrated Eren Yeager's transfer to the Scouts during a military tribunal, leveraging Levi Ackermann's intervention to demonstrate control over Eren's Titan abilities. Erwin publicly framed Eren's power as vital for reclaiming Wall Maria and investigating the Jaeger family basement—his private obsession with uncovering truth. He later exposed a spy within the Scouts after the deaths of Titans Sawney and Beane, deducing the perpetrator possessed Titan-shifting abilities like Eren's.

Erwin recruited Levi Ackermann from the Underground despite knowing Levi was sent to assassinate him under orders from corrupt official Nicholas Lovof. Erwin neutralized the threat by exposing Lovof's corruption, securing Levi's lasting loyalty. Erwin acknowledged the moral weight of his decisions, particularly sending soldiers to their deaths. He confided in Levi that fallen comrades haunted him, yet he viewed their sacrifices as necessary for humanity's cause.

During the Shiganshina expedition, Erwin faced a critical choice: lead a suicide charge against the Beast Titan to enable Levi's counterattack, or pursue the basement. He hesitated, confessing his lifelong dream of verifying his father's theories outweighed humanity's survival. Ultimately, he chose to lead the charge, sacrificing himself and his dream. Before the mission, uncertain of his survival, he designated Hange Zoë as his successor. Erwin perished in the battle, never learning the basement's revelations.
