Description
Mitsuru Kirijou is a third-year student and student council president at Gekkoukan High School in Iwatodai City, and the sole heiress to the powerful and wealthy Kirijo Group. She is a founding member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, or SEES, an organization formed to investigate the Dark Hour and fight the Shadows that appear during it. In the film Spring of Birth, she is one of the key upperclassmen who guides the protagonist Makoto Yuki after he transfers to the school and awakens to his Persona ability.
Born into a family whose research into Shadows inadvertently caused the creation of the Dark Hour, Mitsuru carries a heavy sense of responsibility and guilt over her grandfather's actions. This burden shapes her core motivation: she believes it is her duty alone to atone for her family's past and set the world right. She is extremely dedicated to this mission, often prioritizing the team's goals over her own personal comfort. Her background as the heir to a vast conglomerate has also instilled in her a strong sense of discipline, leadership, and composure.
In terms of personality, Mitsuru is calm, confident, and highly intelligent, consistently ranking at the top of her class. She has a serious and no-nonsense demeanor that can come across as cold or distant to those who do not know her well. She values rationality and logic, and she is outspoken, showing little tolerance for prejudice or foolishness. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a lighter, more emotional side that emerges as she grows closer to her teammates. She is capable of making dry jokes and showing genuine care, though she rarely lets her guard down completely.
Her role in Spring of Birth is primarily as a mentor and guide to Makoto, Junpei Iori, and Yukari Takeba. At the start, she acts as an observer and support, offering analysis and strategic advice rather than directly engaging in combat. She is deeply involved in the decision-making process of SEES, working alongside the chairman Shuji Ikutsuki and her fellow founding members. Her key relationships in this film include Akihiko Sanada, a fellow SEES member and close friend with whom she shares a long history of fighting Shadows; Yukari Takeba, a younger teammate who initially looks up to her but later becomes a crucial source of emotional support; and the protagonist, whose potential she immediately recognizes and recruits into the organization.
Mitsuru's development in Spring of Birth is subtle but significant. She begins the film as a figure of authority who keeps many details about the Dark Hour and Tartarus hidden from the younger members out of a sense of guilt and protectiveness. As the story progresses, she begins to trust her teammates more, allowing them to share the burden she once carried alone. This willingness to rely on others marks the early stage of her character arc, which continues to deepen in later films following the death of her father.
In combat, Mitsuru is a powerful Persona user who wields a rapier or other one-handed swords. Her initial Persona is Penthesilea, which she summons to wield ice-based magic, making her one of the most potent offensive magic users in the group. She is also a skilled strategist, capable of analyzing enemy weaknesses and coordinating the team's attacks. Her composure in battle reflects her disciplined nature, and her abilities grow stronger as she learns to accept her own vulnerabilities.
