Dr. Chrome Ballanche, born Chrome Eiz Fates Balance XI in J.C. 2460 on Delta Belun, hailed from a wealthy family and was the grandson of Lithium Ballanche, inventor of fatimas. His mother, Arsenic Balance, achieved success as a fatima meight. Initially conforming to family expectations, Ballanche graduated with honors and established himself within the fatima meight profession. His unconventional methods, however, soon made him an outcast. He rejected societal limits imposed on fatimas, believing they represented the next stage of human evolution and should not be artificially restricted, a philosophy that guided his work.
Attaining notoriety, Ballanche purchased a castle and large estate on Addler and changed his surname from Balance to Ballanche. There, he began creating Masterpiece fatimas, ultimately producing over 40, a record unsurpassed in Joker history. His first masterpiece, Fatima Queen, embodied his defiance. Constructed without mandatory mind-control systems, she possessed greater strength than typical headliners and the biological capability to bear children – all violations of galactic law. Ballanche concealed Queen's true abilities to protect her.
Ballanche's work forged a significant friendship. During the J.C. 2629 war on Addler, he and Queen encountered Ladios Sopp, an alias used by Emperor Amaterasu of Delta Belun. They formed a close bond lasting 360 years. The Ballanche estate became Sopp's frequent retreat during off-duty periods. This friendship offered Ballanche crucial protection from prosecution; his illegal activities remained an open secret, but few dared challenge Amaterasu's associates, particularly the Mirage Knights.
His later masterpieces included the Three Fates – Atropos, Lachesis, and Clotho – created without any mind control. Lachesis, designated BFOS-44, became particularly significant due to her devotion to Ladios Sopp. Ballanche also began work on a 46th project named Maximum, an attempt to recreate the Super Empire's techniques for producing superior headliners, rather than a new fatima. He did not complete this research.
Towards life's end, Ballanche became guardian to Meeth Silver, a young orphan and mathematical prodigy. Recognizing her talent, he named her his heir and entrusted her with his final work, including the ongoing Maximum project. Ballanche extended his lifespan significantly beyond the typical Joker human span of 300 years through chemical therapies. This resulted in severe side effects, including rapid aging and illness. He died of chemical poisoning in J.C. 2989 at the age of 529.
Ballanche acted as a parental figure to Meeth and his fatima creations, maintaining relationships long after their completion. His castle was later maintained as a retreat for Mirage Knights and their fatimas. The Ballanche family tradition included naming children after metals or semi-metals.
