Description
Nanny, also known as Granny, is Kanta's grandmother and lives with his family in their rural village. She owns the house inhabited by the Kusakabe family and maintained it before their arrival. Granny warmly welcomes the family, helping them settle into their new home.

She embodies kindness and nurturance, providing practical support to the Kusakabes. She frequently cares for young Mei during childcare needs and shares homegrown vegetables like corn and cucumbers to sustain the household. During emergencies—such as Mei’s disappearance—Granny shows deep concern, rallying villagers to aid the search while comforting the anxious older sister, Satsuki. Her calm presence stabilizes the community during crises.

Granny appears elderly, with tanned, deeply wrinkled skin and straight grey hair usually tucked under a white headscarf. She wears functional purple-toned trousers and shirts suited for farm work.

Her relationships center on communal care. She bonds closely with Mei, though the child occasionally resists when parted from Satsuki. With Satsuki, Granny offers solace during worries about their mother’s health, providing reassurance. She gently directs her grandson Kanta to assist Satsuki in urgent moments, like securing phone access for a critical telegram. Through farming, she connects with the village as a respected matriarch.

Granny’s actions remain pragmatic: she explains the soot sprites in the house, aids in cleaning, and joins vegetable harvests. Her role consistently bridges daily tasks and emotional support, reinforcing her as a community elder who embodies the village’s collective spirit.
