Description
Chrono Harlaown is a major supporting character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st, serving as a young but highly capable officer of the Time-Space Administration Bureau.
Born on the planet Midchilda in the year 0051 of the New Calendar, Chrono is the son of two Admiral-level officers, Clyde Harlaown and Lindy Harlaown. His father, Clyde, died during a mission involving a powerful Lost Logia known as the Book of Darkness several years before the events of the movie, an event that had a profound impact on him. Following this tragedy, Chrono began his military career at a very young age and received intensive training from the twin familiars Aria and Lotte Liese, who were under the command of Admiral Gil Graham. By the time of the movie, the fourteen-year-old Chrono holds the rank of Executive Officer aboard his mother's vessel, the dimensional patrol ship Arthra, and is a highly disciplined AAA+ ranked mage.
Chrono's personality is defined by a serious, reserved, and professional demeanor. He takes his responsibilities as a Bureau officer extremely seriously, often leading to contrasts with the more relaxed attitudes of his mother and their colleague Amy Limietta. His early life was deeply shaped by the loss of his father, which left him a stiff and taciturn individual. Despite his serious nature, he possesses a dry sense of humor, often expressed through deadpan or sarcastic comments. He is also shown to have a slight tendency towards embarrassment in certain social situations, such as when Nanoha smiles at him. His primary motivation is a strong sense of duty to prevent the misuse of dangerous artifacts known as Lost Logia and to maintain order, a drive likely intensified by his father's death.
In the story of The MOVIE 1st, Chrono is dispatched to Earth, a non-administrated world, to investigate and contain the incident caused by the scattered Jewel Seeds. He serves as a key authority figure, often acting on the orders of his mother, Captain Lindy Harlaown. He first intervenes personally to stop a fierce battle between the mages Nanoha Takamachi and Fate Testarossa, stating that their reckless use of magical force is hazardous. Throughout the incident, he provides tactical support for the Bureau's mission, capturing the Jewel Seeds, and later helps bring Fate into custody after the conflict in the Garden of Time. While he acts as a rival and authority figure who opposes Nanoha and Fate's unauthorized battles, he develops a professional respect for their magical prowess as the story progresses.
Key relationships define Chrono's interactions. His relationship with his mother and commanding officer, Lindy Harlaown, is often depicted as awkward due to their differing professional and personal boundaries; she is more light-hearted while he is strictly by-the-book. He works closely with his mother's adjutant, Amy Limietta, who often teases him and has a more cheerful personality. His interactions with Nanoha Takamachi begin from a place of professional distance, but he grows to respect her determination and skill. Similarly, after her defeat, he helps Fate Testarossa with her trial and later assists in honing her combat abilities.
As the narrative concludes, he shows some development, moving from a purely rigid enforcer to a more understanding officer who respects the protagonists' strengths and sense of justice. Nevertheless, throughout his appearance, he remains a highly capable and tactical individual. Despite having a relatively low natural capacity for mana compared to prodigies like Nanoha and Fate, Chrono compensates with exceptional training, experience, and tactical acumen. His combat style is categorized as Standalone Generic type, making him well-rounded in offense, defense, and support magic. He is an expert in ranged shooting spells and capturing binds, often using spells like Stinger Ray, a rapid-fire aimed shooting spell, and Stinger Blade Execution Shift, a massive multi-projectile attack. He also possesses the ability to cast the extremely high-level freezing spell, Eternal Coffin, which is ranked S+. He wields a Storage Device named S2U, which does not require a complex aria to activate, allowing for faster spell casting.
