Description
Reinforce begins as the sentient master program within the ancient Tome of the Night Sky, corrupted into the Book of Darkness. This artifact operates as a Unison Device, storing magical knowledge by absorbing mages' linker cores. Existing solely to execute the Book's forced energy collection program, she lacks a name or distinct identity, her actions inevitably triggering catastrophic events upon completion. Her existence spans centuries, though her precise age remains undefined.
In the film continuity, the Book binds to Hayate Yagami, a wheelchair-bound girl. During this time, the Tome exhibits limited autonomy, physically interacting with Hayate as a silent companion in her home. Hayate remains unaware of its sentience or the energy-harvesting missions conducted by its guardians, the Wolkenritter. The corrupted defense program, NachtWal, emerges as the primary antagonist, manipulating events to fulfill the Book's destructive purpose without external foes like Graham.
A pivotal change occurs when Hayate, learning the truth, reprograms the Tome. She names the master program "Reinforce" (meaning "to strengthen") and grants her the title "the Blessed Wind," symbolizing her rebirth as an individual. Reprogramming severs NachtWal's control, enabling Reinforce to Unison with Hayate, merging their consciousnesses for enhanced magical power. Her appearance transforms: purplish-black magic aura and battle gear replace NachtWal's red markings and corruption. This attire includes a black minidress with gold accents, armored boots, and fingerless gloves.
Post-reprogramming, Reinforce joins Hayate and allies against NachtWal's manifested form. She wields wide-area destructive magic like Diabolic Emission and Starlight Breaker, modifying them with unique incantations. Crucially, she retains the "Use of Collection" ability to cast any spell stored in the Book, her magic radiating purplish-black in combat.
Despite victory, Reinforce determines NachtWal's corruption cannot be purged while she endures. Choosing self-destruction to permanently neutralize the Book's threat, she dissolves into energy—her aura shifting to white—after requesting Hayate reserve the "Blessed Wind" title for a successor. A fragment of her device, Schwertkreuz, remains. This sacrifice unfolds during winter.
Her legacy directly inspires Reinforce Zwei (Rein), created in spring 0067. Hayate fashions this new Unison Device using a fragment of her own linker core fused with Reinforce's residual essence. Zwei inherits the name "Reinforce" and title "Blessed Wind," serving as both Unison Device and Hayate's administrative assistant. The film frames its narrative through Zwei recounting her predecessor's story, concluding with Hayate, Nanoha, and Fate meeting the newborn Zwei, diverging from the original series epilogue.
Other continuities offer alternate paths: In *A's Portable*, Nanoha and Fate prevent her destruction, leading to an ongoing battle against the Book's regenerating defenses. Here, she is occasionally termed "Reinforce Eins" and actively trains Hayate in magic. *The Gears of Destiny* explores this timeline, featuring time-travelers mistaking her for "Teacher Rein" (Reinforce Zwei). *Brave Duel* depicts her integrated into the Yagami household, co-managing a shop with Signum and Shamal.
