Movie
Description
NachtWal, originally the Defense Program for the Ancient Belkan artifact "Tome of the Night Sky," protected the tome's master and contents while backing up collected data. Repeated tampering by past masters corrupted its protocols, transforming it into an autonomous regeneration system fixated on completing the book at any cost. This corruption rebranded the tome as the "Book of Darkness" and caused NachtWal to repeatedly go berserk upon the book's completion, triggering dimensional dislocations and killing its masters.

In *The MOVIE 2nd A's*, NachtWal manifested during a hospital rooftop confrontation. Viewing the Wolkenritter knights as expendable, it siphoned their Linker Core mana to sustain itself, leaving their bodies incapacitated. It then forced its master, Hayate Yagami, to awaken and misinterpreted her commands by erasing the Wolkenritter system entirely, returning them as inactive cores. When the Unison Device Reinforce united with Hayate, NachtWal transformed into wearable equipment at her request: first as an Equipment Form (a gauntlet covering her left forearm with a chain extending to a red Examia crystal) and later as an Armament Form called "Spear Cannon." This cross-shaped weapon affixed to the arm and fired energy spears capable of secondary projectile attacks if blocked. During combat, NachtWal destabilized and went berserk, requiring Nanoha Takamachi and Fate Testarossa's combined "Blast Calamity" attack to separate it from Reinforce.

After Hayate reprogrammed the Book of Darkness, NachtWal was expelled and manifested its Eroded Form, characterized as the "Darkness of the Book of Darkness." It generated a two-layer composite barrier to deflect attacks. Despite assaults breaching its defenses, its core remained intact until Shamal teleported it into space, where the *Arthra*'s dimensional weapon "Arc-en-ciel" destroyed it. The movie clarified NachtWal's regeneration functions were inseparably linked to Reinforce's existence, necessitating her self-destruction to prevent the Defense Program's revival.

In alternate continuities, NachtWal's remnants exhibited varied behaviors. The *Portable* video game universe depicted its data core merging with the Book of Darkness's core unit to form "Dearche," while residual "Dark Fragments" attempted to revive the Defense Program. *The Gears of Destiny* spin-off manga introduced a fox-winged hybrid named "Nacht," created from Examia energy and corrupted Book data, which displayed wariness toward Hayate and the Wolkenritter but affinity for Reinforce. *Brave Duel* featured the Armament Form as Reinforce Eins's combat device, while *INNOCENT* reimagined Nacht as a pet "wing-fox" owned by the Yagami family.
