Description
Briareos Hecatonchires, a pivotal figure in the *Appleseed* saga, began life as a Mediterranean human before radical cybernetic transformation. Exploited by the KGB for terrorism as a child, he fled to the former United States after assassinating his commander, becoming an international fugitive. His alliance with Deunan Knute emerged through her father, Carl Knute, a Special Security Forces operative, leading to their joint combat service in a US Army platoon during the Third World War. A catastrophic explosion at thirty-one necessitated full-body cybernetic conversion, preserving only a quarter of his original biology—retaining cardiovascular and digestive functions but losing reproductive capacity.

The Hecatonchires system, named for Greek hundred-armed titans, anchors his cybernetics, enabling simultaneous control of multiple limbs or external machinery, such as operating a Landmate while deploying weaponry. His sensory array includes eight eyes: four frontal sensors, two rear-facing atop antennae resembling rabbit ears, and two at the antennae’s tips for peripheral vision. His organic brain, housed in his chest, collaborates with a cranial auxiliary bio-computer for conceptual processing. Despite his mechanized form, he retains human traits like sweating, bleeding, and weight fluctuation through caloric intake.

Following his transformation, Briareos joined Olympus’s ESWAT unit alongside Deunan, defending the city-state against existential threats. Sustained near-fatal injuries from high-caliber attacks and explosions required repeated repairs, gradually eroding his physical resilience. This deterioration prompted him to view his clone, Tereus, as a potential successor to safeguard Deunan.

Marked by loyalty and defiance, Briareos favors improvised tactics over rigid strategies. His bond with Deunan intertwines professional collaboration with profound emotional ties, though his cybernetic body complicates physical intimacy. *Appleseed XIII* expanded his backstory to include African heritage, detailing his mother’s death under racial segregation—a narrative departure from earlier versions.

His visual design varies across adaptations: manga iterations feature flexible antennae and evolving eye configurations, while films present rigid structures. *Appleseed XIII* reintroduced manga elements like his motorcycle and a two-eyed visage, aligning with prior cinematic depictions. His aesthetic influence extends to other media, notably shaping designs in Neill Blomkamp’s *Chappie*.

Briareos’s journey grapples with the clash between human identity and mechanical augmentation, underscoring resilience, adaptability, and the ethical quandaries of post-humanity. As Olympus’s steadfast guardian, he confronts political intrigue, terrorism, and the paradoxes of utopian governance.
