Description
Kikuno Shōkanji is a first-year student in class 1-F at Hatagaya School who serves as the childhood best friend of the protagonist, Souta Hatate. She has dark green hair that is typically styled in a side ponytail on the right side, fastened with a blue polka dot ribbon. Her appearance includes square bangs that hang over her forehead, neck-length strands framing her face, golden-brown eyes, and a distinct beauty mark situated beneath one eye. Her usual attire consists of her school uniform complemented by an apron and stockings.
Kikuno possesses an energetic and expressive personality, often displaying a cheerful and doting demeanor toward those she cares about. Her most defining characteristic is her immense attachment to Souta, whom she treats with persistent affection and a distinctly sisterly manner. This fixation manifests through physical gestures such as tackle-hugging and a constant desire to care for him, reflecting what is known as her recurring sibling love flag, which represents an unwavering devotion that persists despite any attempts to diminish it. While generally upbeat, she can become momentarily depressed when her sensitivity about her weight is inadvertently touched upon, such as when Souta asked if she had gotten heavier.
Kikuno and Souta were childhood best friends whose relationship was interrupted when his family moved away. During their time apart, she studied overseas, and because she missed a significant amount of school due to this experience, she was placed in the same first-year class as Souta upon her return to Japan and transfer to Hatagaya School. After reuniting with him, she quickly integrated into his social circle, forming friendships with Nanami Knight Bladefield and Akane Mahougasawa, and took up residence in the Quest Dorm alongside Souta and the other female characters.
Her role within the narrative framework involves serving as the summoner for a party assembled to change a destined fate. She frequently takes initiative in organizing group activities, such as coordinating methods for everyone to wake Souta simultaneously. She also participates in group events and outings, including a pillow fight at Akane's house and a collective date with Souta alongside other female residents of the dormitory. During summer break, she accompanies Souta to his hometown, where she continues to spoil him in a sisterly fashion.
In her past while separated from Souta, she formed a friendship with Rin Eiyūzaki, to whom she spoke about her childhood friend, though she was initially unaware that Rin also shared a past connection with Souta. Kikuno occasionally exhibits jealousy regarding her position in Souta's life, as shown when she felt upset at the prospect of another character, Kurumiko, becoming a little sister figure to Souta, fearing it would undermine her own cherished role. Ultimately, she resolved this by deciding to accept Kurumiko as her own little sister as well.
The meaning embedded in her name reflects aspects of her character. Kikuno combines chrysanthemum with a possessive particle, while her surname Shōkanji incorporates the concept of summoning or invocation combined with temple, which aligns with her designated function within the story's party structure.
