Description
Sōta Hatate is a transfer student to Hatagaya School endowed with the unique ability to perceive colored "flags" above people's heads. These flags visualize future fates, signifying events like death, friendship, romance, or victory. He can actively "break" or alter these flags through his choices and actions, changing the course of destinies.

His past is marked by trauma as the sole survivor of the sinking cruise ship Premium Ambriel. During that voyage, he acquired his flag-seeing ability through a chess-like game with a girl named Sakura. This event scarred him psychologically, leading him to avoid deep connections for fear of witnessing or causing negative outcomes.

Assigned to the rundown Quest Dorm at Hatagaya, he lives with several female students. His ability soon reveals a death flag above his own head, spurring him into a quest to alter his fate. He must assemble a group of four individuals embodying specific archetypes: a princess knight, a magician, a cleric, and a shinobi.

Key relationships drive his development. Nanami Knight Bladefield, the thirteenth princess of the European principality of Bladefield, becomes the "princess knight." Initially interested in his ability, she is later revealed to be his older sister. Akane Mahougasawa, granddaughter of the Mahougasawa Foundation's founder, serves as the "magician." Her persistent friendship flag, which reappears despite Sōta's attempts to break it, leads to a critical incident. He converts her death flag into a "route conquered" love flag with a kiss, causing her to develop romantic feelings for him.

Other significant figures include Kikuno Shōkanji, a doting childhood friend acting as an older sister figure; Megumu Tōzokuyama, a boy often mistaken for a girl who becomes a trusted friend; Rin Eiyūzaki, an archery club member later revealed to be Sōta's childhood friend "Souda," whose "hates men" flag transforms into a yandere flag upon recognition; and Ruri Ninjabayashi, an android created by the Mahougasawa Foundation who serves as the "shinobi" and acts as his programmed little sister.

Sōta's interactions gradually help him overcome his isolationist tendencies. His flag-breaking ability is repeatedly tested, especially against death flags. Revelations about his lineage as a member of the Bladefield family (born Souta Bladefield) and his familial ties to Nanami and another sister, Hakua, further shape his identity and motivations.

He has brown eyes and short brown hair reaching his ears, typically seen in his school uniform, and stands approximately 170 cm tall.
