Description
Junpei Senō resides on Shikotan Island with his younger brother Kanta, their father Tatsuo, and grandfather Genzō. Following Japan's defeat in World War II, Soviet forces occupy the island, compelling the family to relocate to their stable while the Russian commander's family occupies their main house.
Initial tension with the Russian children at school eases after a playground incident, leading Junpei to form a gradual friendship with the commander's daughter, Tanya. Junpei and Kanta adopt the aliases "Giovanni" and "Campanella" from "Night on the Galactic Railroad" when interacting with her, using the story as an imaginative escape.
As tensions escalate, Junpei assists his uncle Hideo by lighting signal fires for Hideo's nighttime ration smuggling operations. Meanwhile, his father Tatsuo secretly distributes emergency food stores to villagers, actions which result in Hideo's capture and Tatsuo's arrest by Soviet authorities.
During the forced evacuation of Japanese residents from Shikotan, Junpei and Kanta travel with their teacher Sawako to an internment camp in Maoka. Learning their father is held nearby, Junpei accompanies Kanta on an unauthorized journey through mountainous terrain to find him. Kanta falls critically ill during the escape. Junpei carries him, continuing their father's tradition of narrating the Galactic Railroad story. After Kanta dies, Junpei speaks to his brother's body, maintaining the pretense he is alive to prevent Soviet guards from disposing of it, and envisions Kanta's spirit departing on the Galactic Railroad.
Fifty-six years later, Junpei returns to Shikotan for a belated graduation ceremony for former residents. He encounters Tanya's granddaughter, who gives him a notebook containing his childhood sketch of Tanya. In return, he gifts her his copy of "Night on the Galactic Railroad." He learns Tanya died the previous year. At a gathering, he dances with Tanya's granddaughter and envisions the spirits of Shikotan's original residents, including his brother and father, dancing together among the stars.
