Description
Melancholy emerges as a primary antagonist in the second season, initially aligned with the Orpheus Order. Born into a wealthy noble family, she displayed exceptional puzzle-solving skills from childhood, signaling her Phi Brain potential. Her parents perished in a car accident, leaving her in her uncle's care. He later died in a Fool's Puzzle created by Freecell, who remained unaware of his involvement. This tragedy fueled Melancholy's intense personal grudge against Freecell. Left without guardians, she unwillingly joined the Master Brain and the Orpheus Order.

Physically very short and often mistaken for a child despite claiming otherwise, she possesses long orange hair and blue eyes. Her typical attire includes a dark blue blazer over a white shirt with a matching necktie, a dark blue skirt, white boots, and a dark blue hat featuring a red rose. Her personality initially projects a childish, arrogant, and selfish facade, presenting as a spoiled girl. This behavior, however, is later revealed as a deliberate act masking her true nature, driven by profound loneliness and unresolved trauma from her family's loss.

Throughout the second season, she participates in Orpheus Order schemes. She demonstrates her puzzle skill in a sliding puzzle match against Cubic, aided by her Orpheus Ring. After her team's defeat by Kaito and Gammon, she later challenges Rook to a collapsing maze puzzle. Her calculated betrayal of Mizerka, whom she pretended to regard as an older sister, becomes pivotal. Melancholy admits her "little sister" persona was an act, confessing she found Mizerka inferior and annoying, tolerating her only out of necessity. This betrayal contributes to Mizerka's mental breakdown and the shattering of her replica ring. Melancholy subsequently allies with Klondike and Whist. Witnessing Klondike's duel with Kaito, she flees with them from pursuing ex-Orpheus members and POG. Freecell confronts them, his overwhelming power amplified by his Orpheus Ring terrifying Melancholy so profoundly that her own ring shatters without direct physical contact.

In the third season, following the Orpheus Order's dissolution, Melancholy resurfaces as a Master Brain serving Enigma. She orchestrates a trap for Freecell at a train yard, luring Kaito, Gammon, and Nonoha to England. Enigma unexpectedly forces her to participate as the fourth player in a four-player Fool's Puzzle alongside Freecell. The puzzle involves paired teams navigating connecting pipes within invisible rooms, designed for only one team to survive. Kaito's innovative use of a four-way pipe enables everyone to escape. Afterward, Melancholy invites the group to her mansion. During a blackout, she reveals her tragic past and grudge against Freecell. Later, finding Kaito, Gammon, and Freecell playing with puzzles in a specific bedroom—puzzles she identifies as tools used to heighten her Phi Brain potential—she reacts furiously. Ignoring Freecell's pleas, she gathers and burns all the puzzles, though she is later seen tearfully collecting their ashes. Kaito deduces she created puzzles out of loneliness. When Kaito and his friends offer friendship, she bluntly declines. Before their departure, Freecell and Kaito construct a crossword puzzle for her containing a hidden message about meeting again.

Melancholy gradually shifts toward an ally role later in the third season. After Orpheus manipulates Jin's mind and body, she experiences a vision of a ruined future. This prompts her to provide Kaito and his allies transportation to Amgine aboard her private yacht. In the days leading to Kaito and Raetsel's Puzzle of God challenge, she assists Nonoha with baking cookies and participates in a girls' slumber party alongside Ana and Raetsel. Notably, during her sleep, she talks fondly about Freecell.

Key relationships define her arc. Her intense fear of Freecell in Season 2, stemming from his indirect role in her uncle's death, evolves into a complex dynamic by Season 3. Though initially seeking revenge, her actions suggest a deeper desire for connection. Freecell consistently seeks her forgiveness and friendship. Nonoha believes Melancholy has already forgiven Freecell, understanding the Orpheus Ring's influence on his past actions. Kaito theorizes she became a Master Brain primarily to reunite with Freecell and others. Her sleep-talking about him implies potential feelings developed after his liberation from the Ring. Her relationship with Mizerka is marked by deception. While Mizerka genuinely treated her like a younger sister and depended on her emotionally, Melancholy maintained a false persona. Her cruel rejection and betrayal directly contributed to Mizerka's psychological breakdown.
