Description
Roberto Frois is a Christian missionary of mixed Spanish and Japanese heritage, born to a Spanish father and Japanese mother. His father died shortly after his birth, leading Roberto and his mother to relocate to Kyushu, Japan. There, their foreign appearance provoked significant abuse from villagers, fostering Roberto's distrust of Japanese people and refusal to speak Japanese despite fluency. His mother died during Hideyoshi Toyotomi's 1586 invasion of Kyushu, which destroyed their village. Portuguese missionary Luis Frois subsequently found and adopted Roberto, caring for him alongside 26 other orphans.
Luis Frois conducted Genma research at Toyokuni Research Facilities under Hideyoshi's orders, with Roberto viewing these facilities as home. After Hideyoshi banned Christianity in 1588, Luis was exempt due to being possessed by the Genma scientist Rosencrantz. The possessed Luis experimented on and killed all 26 orphans. Roberto was spared when Luis surgically implanted Exorcising Beads into his body, granting him power to kill Genma and destroy Dark Stones—crystalline structures powering the Genma's plans. Roberto later discovered the beads also functioned as keys to the research facilities. He was captured by Rosencrantz seeking the source of his power but escaped.
Roberto first appears imprisoned in Sawayama Castle, rejecting an alliance with Soki and Tenkai and attacking Soki before escaping to pursue Luis. During this encounter, he inadvertently leaves behind his pendant. He later rejoins the group during a confrontation with Mitsunari Ishida and Luis, falling through a trapdoor with Soki. Convinced by Tenkai speaking Spanish, Roberto reluctantly joins the mission to assault Kyoto's Diago Blossoming Festival. Upon seeing Luis there, he flies into a rage and separates from the group.
He is captured by Luis and subjected to torturous experiments at Osaka's San Espana Hospital to extract the secret of his power. Rescued by Soki's group, Roberto suffers severe injuries but survives due to Ohatsu's care. This kindness leads him to begin speaking Japanese and fully commit to the group's cause. He develops romantic feelings for Ohatsu during his recovery, though these remain unreciprocated.
Roberto retrieves his pendant from Sawayama Castle with the group's help, enabling access to the Sakai research facility. There, he translates Spanish documents revealing the Genma Triumvirate's plan to revive their god using the Omen Star and Dark Stones. He destroys the first Dark Stone in Sakai, exposing Mitsunari's manipulation by Claudius. Later, at the Shimabara facility, he attempts to destroy the second Dark Stone but is thwarted by Mitsunari. Sakon Shima's intervention allows Roberto to succeed, triggering an explosion that kills both Rosencrantz and Luis. In his final moments, Luis regains control and praises Roberto's actions.
After the Genma's defeat, Roberto returns to Spain to prevent Genma influence from establishing there. His primary weapons are gauntlets named after archangels Raphael, Uriel, and Michael, which channel the Exorcising Beads' power.
