Description
Basara Nekki, orphaned in Japan's mountainous wilderness, owned little beyond his clothes and an acoustic guitar. During this solitary existence, he cultivated a profound belief in music's power, singing even through typhoons in attempts to "move mountains." His life shifted upon meeting Ray Lovelock, a former U.N. Spacy pilot battling alcoholism. Recognizing Basara's talent and determination, Ray helped form the rock band Fire Bomber. Basara serves as their lead vocalist and guitarist, alongside bassist Mylene Flare Jenius and Zentradi drummer Veffidas Feaze.

Basara exhibits exceptional, unexplained piloting skills. He flies a customized red VF-19 Excalibur dubbed the "Fire Valkyrie," featuring a guitar-shaped control interface and speaker pods replacing conventional weapons. Disdaining violence, he refuses missiles except in rare moments of uncontrolled anger. His signature battlefield tactic involves deploying speaker pods near enemy mecha while broadcasting his songs and catchphrase, "Listen to my song!" He believes music can reach opponents' hearts and halt conflicts without destruction.

During the Macross 7 fleet's encounters with the energy-draining Protodeviln, Basara repeatedly intervenes in battles despite military objections. Initially ineffective, his music eventually revives victims drained of their spiritual energy (Spiritia). This leads to his recruitment into the civilian tactical unit Sound Force, though he maintains a nonconformist attitude toward military protocols. Later revelations identify him as an "Anima Spiritia," a being whose songs counter the Protodeviln. He focuses intensely on reaching the Protodeviln Sivil through music, recognizing her free-spirited nature. His persistence influences the Protodeviln Gigile, who becomes an ally after Basara's music awakens his true form. Ultimately, Basara's singing enables the Protodeviln to evolve into a self-sustaining species no longer dependent on draining Spiritia.

Basara possesses a complex personality. Intensely focused on his music, he often works late into the night or pulls all-nighters writing songs, resulting in chronic lateness and frequent napping. Socially, he appears aloof or blunt, speaking casually and showing little interest in topics outside his passions—traits stemming from his isolated upbringing, which left him emotionally reserved yet deeply sensitive. He experiences distress when compromising his pacifist principles, such as using missiles once to save lives or punching someone to protect Mylene. Conversely, he displays exuberance during performances or when pursuing musical goals. His relationship with Mylene involves constant bickering, though he acknowledges her talent and protects her when needed. He shares an unspoken understanding with Veffidas and a gradually evolving rivalry-turned-respect with military pilot Gamlin Kizaki.

In later adventures like *Macross Dynamite 7*, Basara continues his quest to share music across the galaxy. He pilots a commercial VT-1C Valkyrie and later a VF-19P Excalibur equipped with speakers, demonstrating his ability to adapt standard control systems through unconventional means—including manipulating his acoustic guitar to pilot indirectly. His core philosophy remains unchanged: using music to communicate and resolve conflicts without violence.
