Description
Izumo Kusanagi stands as second-in-command and primary strategist for the Red Clan, HOMRA. He owns and operates the bar bearing the clan's name, displaying deep protectiveness towards the establishment that reflects his appreciation for art and history. Damage to the bar provokes uncharacteristically strong reactions from him, contrasting sharply with his typically composed demeanor.
Born in Kyoto as the youngest of several siblings, he moved to Tokyo for high school, lodging with his uncle Mizuomi. During this time, he began assisting at his uncle's bar, HOMRA, and forged a lifelong bond with Mikoto Suoh, the future Red King. Their friendship solidified when they encountered Tatara Totsuka, a persistent middle school student following Mikoto. After Totsuka was hospitalized from a beating, Kusanagi initially warned him to stay away for safety, though Totsuka eventually joined them and became a part-time bartender. Kusanagi inherited and took ownership of the bar following Mizuomi's death.
Kusanagi consistently maintains a calm, rational personality, remaining composed even in combat or crises, a demeanor that sometimes intimidates others. He possesses extensive knowledge derived from a network of underground informants and involvement in "shady business." He speaks in the Kyoto dialect, is an avid smoker, openly acknowledges numerous past relationships as a known womanizer, and frequently engages in flirtatious behavior.
As HOMRA’s de facto strategist, he prioritizes minimizing conflict through diplomacy but demonstrates combat proficiency when necessary. His profound loyalty drives him to actively mediate internal disputes to maintain cohesion. He witnessed and facilitated inductions like Shōhei Akagi's into HOMRA, intervening in conflicts such as Bandō’s initial hostility toward Akagi. He later coordinated HOMRA's responses to threats against members, including a drug gang targeting Akagi and an assassin targeting Yō Chitose.
Following Mikoto Suoh's death, Kusanagi temporarily disbanded HOMRA, entrusted Anna Kushina to Rikio Kamamoto’s care, and departed Tokyo. During this period, Anna’s powers became unstable and HOMRA fragmented. Learning of Anna’s kidnapping by the Green Clan (Jungle) during their pursuit of the Silver King prompted Kusanagi's return. He protected Neko during the assault on the Gold King’s tower and aided Misaki Yata in distracting captors, enabling Yata to reach Anna. His reassurance helped catalyze her transition into the new Red King, reinstating bonds among former HOMRA members as their clan insignias reappeared.
After these events, Kusanagi traveled to Dresden, Germany, to investigate the Dresden Slate—the source of Kings' powers—at the State Library. Collaborating with Scepter 4’s Seri Awashima, he explored archives containing materials recovered from post-World War II air raids, seeking clues relevant to the Kings' challenges. This investigation underscored his resourcefulness and commitment to protecting others, particularly Anna, who silently carried her own burdens.
Physically, Kusanagi stands 188 cm tall with dark blonde hair and hazel eyes, bearing a HOMRA insignia on his right shoulder blade. His signature accessory is a pair of black-framed sunglasses with purple lenses, worn consistently since age 24. His typical attire includes a white collared shirt, a red or black scarf, an open black jacket, blue jeans, and distinctive black shoes with white accents.
