Kinkaku Ebisugawa is one of the twin sons of Sōun Ebisugawa and a cousin to the Shimogamo brothers. Alongside his identical twin Ginkaku, he actively antagonizes the Shimogamo family, frequently targeting the youngest brother Yashirō with bullying tactics like locking him in a storage shed at the Ebisugawa Power Plant area where they reside.
The twins display a condescending attitude, looking down on the Shimogamos and attempting to project sophistication through complex vocabulary. However, their misapplication of these words reveals a lack of understanding, emphasizing foolishness over intellect. Their antagonism involves repeated schemes against the Shimogamos, though these plans often backfire. A recurring outcome sees them thrown into freezing cold water by the Shimogamos, a running gag within the narrative.
Physically, Kinkaku possesses black hair, ochre eyes, and bangs parted in the middle, distinguishing him from Ginkaku whose bangs sweep to the side. In human form, both twins feature orange highlights under the corners of each eye, mirroring their father.
Their motivations stem from family rivalry and Sōun's deep-seated envy and resentment toward his brother, the late Shimogamo patriarch Sōichirō. Sōun severed ties after Sōichirō's death, striving to replace him as Nise-emon leader of the tanuki society. Kinkaku and Ginkaku support their father's ambitions, fueling the familial conflict. Following Sōun's death, their older brother Kureichirō approaches the Shimogamos seeking peace; the twins' own position on reconciliation remains unstated.
Kinkaku shows no significant character development or redemption across the series. He remains a consistent antagonistic figure alongside his twin, embodying trickster traits that perpetuate the core familial discord.
