Yasaburō Shimogamo, third son of the late Sōichirō Shimogamo (former Nise-emon leader of Kyoto's tanuki society), navigates life shaped by his father's capture and consumption by the human gourmet group, the Friday Fellows. This event was partly orchestrated by his uncle, Sōun Ebisugawa, and involved the human-tengu associate Benten.
In human form, Yasaburō appears as a young male with short brown hair and brown eyes, typically wearing a black vest over a white t-shirt. His tanuki form resembles his father. A highly skilled shapeshifter, he frequently shifts forms, including into a young woman—an ability that frustrates his elder brother and mentor. These transformations serve practical purposes like espionage or evasion, as well as playful ones.
His personality blends carefree recklessness with deep familial loyalty. While claiming his father's impulsiveness, he demonstrates underlying kindness, notably forgiving the Friday Fellows. Protecting his family is paramount, driving him to intervene in assassination plots and rival conflicts. Relationships define his actions: he respects his tengu mentor, Professor Akadama, regularly bringing him supplies and companionship. His dynamic with Benten mixes attraction, wariness, and unresolved tension from her role in his father's capture; though she reciprocates his feelings, she ambiguously laments her compulsion to "eat what she loves".
Yasaburō was once betrothed to his cousin Kaisei Ebisugawa, an arrangement canceled after his father's death. Kaisei avoids revealing her true form to him, as it disrupts his transformations—a fact concealed until later. Their engagement is reinstated by the conclusion of the series' second season. Within his family, Yasaburō acts as a mediator. His eldest brother, Yaichirō, shoulders leadership aspirations; his second brother, Yajirō, lives guilt-ridden as a frog after indirectly contributing to their father's demise; and his youngest brother, Yashirō, struggles with timidness manifesting as accidental tail exposure.
His narrative arc involves uncovering the truth behind his father's death while navigating the uneasy coexistence of humans, tanuki, and tengu in Kyoto. He thwarts Sōun's schemes to control the tanuki community and later reconciles with the Ebisugawa family after Sōun's demise. Yasaburō's development includes accepting his father's legacy of compassion, forgiving Sōun posthumously, and reaffirming his commitment to Kaisei.
His abilities center on expert shapeshifting, enabling him to mimic humans, objects, or animals. This skill aids escapades, information gathering, and family protection. Association with Akadama and Benten grants him unique insights into tengu magic and human society, positioning him as a bridge between the three factions.
