Kaisei Ebisugawa, a tanuki of the rival Ebisugawa family, serves as daughter to Soun Ebisugawa and cousin to the Shimogamo brothers. Her father severed ties with the Shimogamos following the death of his brother, Soichiro Shimogamo. This rupture nullified Kaisei’s pre-existing arranged marriage to Yasaburo Shimogamo, the family’s third son. Kaisei maintains a complex dynamic with Yasaburo, deliberately avoiding her true tanuki or human forms in his presence. Instead, she interacts with him disguised as inanimate objects. This behavior stems from her concealed trait: exposure to her true form involuntarily disrupts Yasaburo’s shapeshifting abilities, forcing his tanuki features to manifest. Petite in human guise, Kaisei appears younger than her true age, which aligns with Yasaburo’s. Despite familial hostilities, she exhibits kindness toward the Shimogamos—contrasting her antagonistic father and twin brothers, Kinkaku and Ginkaku. She harbors deep resentment toward Benten, a human tied to the Friday Fellows, due to Benten’s role in her uncle Soichiro’s capture and demise. Her relationship with Yasaburo’s older brother, Yajiro Shimogamo, introduces further tension. Yajiro nurses unrequited feelings for her, complicated by her prior engagement to Yasaburo. His guilt over his father’s death and self-exile as a frog obstruct potential closeness between them. After Soun transforms into an oni and is killed by a Friday Fellows member, Kaisei’s older brother Kureichiro emerges. He reconciles with the Shimogamos, signaling a shift in family relations. By the second season’s conclusion, Yasaburo reinstates his engagement to Kaisei, suggesting resolution to their intricate bond and a prospective union between the families.
