Ginkaku is one of the twin sons of Sōun Ebisugawa and a cousin to the Shimogamo brothers. He and his twin brother Kinkaku belong to the Ebisugawa family, which maintains a strained and competitive relationship with the Shimogamo family following the death of the former family head, Sōichirō Shimogamo.
Ginkaku and his brother exhibit a condescending attitude and take pleasure in tormenting their cousin Yashirō Shimogamo, exploiting his shy nature and his tendency to suffer glamour failure when frightened. They habitually engage in sesquipedalian loquaciousness, employing long and complicated words in an effort to appear more intelligent, though their frequent misuse of these terms undermines this intention.
A recurring event involves the twins being thrown into frigid water by the Shimogamo family, an incident that becomes a running gag. Their actions are often motivated by a desire to undermine the Shimogamo family and elevate their own standing within Kyoto's tanuki society.
Their father, Sōun Ebisugawa, harbored envy toward his brother Sōichirō and was implicated in his death. After Sōun's death, the twins' older brother, Kureichirō Ebisugawa, seeks reconciliation with the Shimogamo family.
Ginkaku and Kinkaku are employed at the Electric Wine Factory, where Yashirō Shimogamo also works. Their persistent antagonism toward him remains a consistent aspect of their role in the narrative.
