Yama, known as Logan in some adaptations, hails from a Gaia Sanction colony on Mars. He shares a family bond with his older brother Ezra and childhood companion Nami. A defining childhood event occurred when an accidental explosion in a greenhouse, triggered during Yama's attempt to restore his mother's flowers, left Ezra paralyzed and Nami dependent on life support. This tragedy burdened Yama with deep guilt. Seeking redemption, he accepted Ezra's mission to infiltrate Captain Harlock's starship, the Arcadia, with orders to capture or kill Harlock.
Successfully boarding the Arcadia, Yama initially served under crew member Kei Yuki. His deadly accuracy, especially with the ship's turrets, earned him recognition. During a mission to place a vibration bomb, he sacrificed himself to save Kei, leading to a confrontation with Harlock where Yama confessed his true purpose. Harlock, already aware of the plot, revealed Yama's expendable status to the Gaia Sanction. This prompted Yama's defection after Harlock offered him a place aboard.
His loyalty remained unstable. Returning to the Solar System and confronting Ezra, Yama learned Harlock's true objective: detonating 100 bombs to annihilate the existing universe and trigger a new Big Bang, contradicting the crew's belief in a mere temporal reset. Simultaneously, Ezra exposed Harlock's responsibility for Earth's devastation through a failed dark matter experiment. Feeling betrayed, Yama sided with Ezra, facilitating the capture of Harlock and the crew. This decision was complicated when Ezra murdered Nami during an argument where she confessed her love for Yama and rejected Ezra. Consumed by rage and grief, Yama descended to Earth's barren surface and discovered flowers thriving – proof that life endured. This solidified his rejection of both Harlock's nihilism and the Gaia Sanction's deception.
Armed with the flower as evidence, Yama freed the Arcadia crew and rejoined them. He aided in exposing the Gaia Sanction's holographic concealment of Earth's true state, undermining their authority. During a subsequent battle, Ezra boarded the Arcadia. Their zero-gravity confrontation ended with Ezra shooting Yama, scarring his face and damaging his right eye. Harlock intervened, mortally wounding Ezra. Dying, Ezra ambiguously claimed his actions were motivated by love for Nami. With the Arcadia crashing on Earth, Harlock prepared the final detonator but yielded control to Yama. Yama chose to spare the universe, declaring Earth a "gift from Nami and Ezra." Harlock bestowed his signature eyepatch upon Yama, symbolically passing the mantle of captaincy. Yama assumed command of the Arcadia, embracing the identity of the next Captain Harlock.
Physically, Yama has shoulder-length brown hair, light brown eyes, and a lean build. His attire evolved from a Gaia Sanction blue uniform to a black pirate outfit bearing a Jolly Roger emblem. Ezra's injury left a prominent scar over his right eye, later concealed by Harlock's eyepatch. His skills encompass proficient firearms handling and an innate aptitude for operating the Arcadia's weaponry. After gaining the ship's acceptance, he demonstrated the ability to harness its dark matter engines.
