Description
Shima Kawauchi endured profound family instability in childhood, crushed by intense pressure to meet his parents' conflicting demands for flawless performance in academics, sports, and conduct. This relentless pressure culminated in a psychological breakdown, prompting his grandfather's intervention and assumption of custody. Living in his grandfather's coastal home, Shima slowly recovered through therapeutic support and activities like fishing trips, which offered crucial emotional release. Despite this progress, deep-seated loneliness and insecurity lingered, rooted in a fear of rejection should he ever show his true self.

After his grandfather's death, Shima plunged into profound grief, frequently visiting the ocean to mourn. During one visit, he accidentally dropped a memorial photograph into the sea and nearly drowned trying to retrieve it. He was rescued by a merman, whom Shima later named Isaki. Recognizing their shared isolation, Shima invited Isaki to live with him on land.

Cohabitation with Isaki presented initial practical hurdles but gradually nurtured emotional openness in Shima. He shared the details of his fractured family history—his parents' divorce and his resulting self-esteem struggles—and began expressing vulnerabilities more freely. Encouraged by Isaki, Shima started socializing at school, forming new friendships and joining extracurricular activities. However, as Shima spent increasing time away, Isaki felt unnecessary and returned to the ocean.

Isaki's departure triggered a relapse into Shima's earlier despair. He rushed to the beach and recklessly jumped into the water, fully aware he couldn't swim, forcing Isaki to rescue him again. In this critical moment, Shima openly acknowledged his dependence on Isaki and confessed his romantic feelings, solidifying his acceptance of his identity and emotional needs.

The resolution revealed Shima's transformation: he rejected societal expectations by openly prioritizing his relationship with Isaki over conventional norms, explicitly declining suggestions to pursue a girlfriend. His journey concluded with a mutual commitment to remain together, embracing both his vulnerabilities and his affection for Isaki.
